When I think about the $249 million it cost to build Enron, I am beginning to believe it was an incredible bargain!

    From the SportingNews.com:

As expected, the Boston Red Sox have the legislative support to move forward with their planned new Fenway Park. The Massachusetts Senate passed the bill authorizing $312 million in state and city aid for the team's proposed new $665 million ballpark project. The House of Representatives followed suit. It would seem the Red Sox are far from happy with the deal they've agreed to.

The bill calls for the state to spend $100 million on road, subway, utility, and other infrastructure improvements near the ballpark. The plan also requires the city to spend $140 million to acquire the proposed site and clean it up, and $72 million to build a 3,000-car garage.

The bill calls for the city to get back their entire expenditure. The city will get their money back for the most part on user fees. A 5 percent surcharge will be attached to all tickets. Luxury boxes will include a 15 percent tax. A $5 game-day parking surcharge within a mile of the park. If the fees fail to raise $11 million a year needed to repay the city, the Red Sox must make up the difference.

How in the hell can a ballpark cost over $600 million??? I can see that the city and state getting their money back by taxing the users goes over fine with their public officials. But, $600 million is just nuts.

If they have that much money, maybe they can throw a couple of hundred million our way to build the Rockets arena.

Wasn't it the Skydome that cost about $600-$700 million? And that was a few years ago...

I think you are thinking of Safeco Field. That was just a fiasco. They proposed like $300 million but went like $300 or $400 million over the budget. Now, the city and the team are suing each other over the whole thing. Bizarre.

Of course, even more amazing is the Big Dig. If you dont know about this, I suggest you read up on it...it is really amazing/ridiculous. They are completely redoing the main artery of traffic flow through Boston for a mere 10 billion dollars (or a number very close to that...it may actually have escalated beyond that by now).
I have seen specials on what they are doing and it is very state of the art stuff that is pretty cool, but 10 billion dollars. They should be able to build a highway halfway to Houston for that much money.

I think the new field in San Francisco was completely done with private finance and considered the best baseball field anywhere. Also Turner Field is considered to be a beautiful park, near the top, and that was also financed mostly by Ted Turner.

Most of these people have billions if not millions of dollars to spend.
Why can't all of them be built like that?
