My house is in desperate need of insulation (built in '53 and pretty sure all is what is left of original). We knew this when we bought but are only just now getting around to looking into it.

So....does anyone know a good person or company for doing it? I always prefer some form of referral or "personal" contact. I know materials generally eat up most of the expense, so I am just looking for competent and not overpriced. And no fancy foams needed, just the basic insulation.

Thanks in advance for any contacts or suggestions.

If that's original insulation, the first thing I would do is check for asbestos.

I did mine back in the summer (insulation and radiant barrier)

when the installers arrived, I slipped them an extra $80 and they threw in an extra 8" of insulation for free.

I don't want to get the guys in any sort of trouble - so PM me through the board and I can tell you the name of the company and the installer as well.

    Boy was that written poorly...

Firstly it was $40... not $80.

Secondly, obviously the insulation wasn't for free since it cost me $40 (under the table) but was much cheaper than had I ordered an extra 8" of insulation from the company itself.

They are one of the only vendors on Angie's list with a 5 star rating. The owner comes to every job and they are very clean and professional. They give you a quote over the phone. Best of all they are fast.

If you use them tell them Shervin Joseph recomended you.

I'm a big proponent of DIY, especially with insulation (if all you're talking about is attic). Go to Lowes or Home Depot and check out the prices. If you buy something like 20 bails of the spray-in stuff, they give you the sprayer free for a day. Super easy, fast, and cheap. You will need two people- one to load the sprayer and one to spray in the attic. Tip: Duct-tape a broomstick to the end of the sprayer tube. Allows for better handling and aim.
