Well that's rather quick, not sure as a player I would like it to be so soon, though could be perfect to know it's truly over and you can move on. I can respect it from the Heat's POV and good for Haslem, but as a player of course this is not deserved. Also with the last 7 years of those 20 were just being injured, collecting DNP-CDs etc.

I would guess he did some motivational work with youngsters and organizational stuff so that paycheck was not a waste after all....

Yeah hence why I said as a player, I'm sure as a person he was very valuable and I understand the retiring of his number. Good reminder tho that we shouldn't get bogged down in the nitty gritty of what a player did on the court. These are people in the end who mean very much to a city, the community and an organization.

Heck, Yao Ming was a global icon more off the court even than on the court..... but not everyone is like that, I would a say a small percentage of players have more off the court impact....

When we talk strictly superstars, I only see Steph and Lebron having this kind of global impact where it transcends even their game.

In terms of role players, that role player probably has to play all their career, at least 10 years with the organization and practically become a player coach during his time......to qualify.

Then you can nitpick and compare them to other great role players in club history.

That is how you gauge that 1% of role players that get their jersey retired.

He was with the team for 20 years (During which he was a vital part of multiple championship team. He is a club Icon. I can totally understand why they did this, and I would support it if I was a heat fan.

Whatever under the table deal Haslem agreed to back the the heatles era, you sure as hell can't say the Heat haven't followed through. They kept writing him checks even through he's been done for years, and now a retired jersey for a solid role player.

This is equivalent to the Rockets retiring Carl Herreras jersey.

The heat is a great franchise when considering its relative age.

Retiring the jersey with haslem being florida native and miami favorite is a service to him and the fans

His jersey will look great next to Michael Jordan's. Both of them have combined for something like 2 games in the last 6 or 7 years or so. Heat Couture!

Carl Herrera only played 4 seasons for the Rockets.

Haslem spent his whole 20-year career with the Heat.

It's just a kind of a classy "lifelong service" award thing.
