    Okay, to the point.

I've gotten that progressive is better than interlaced, but would that make 720p better than 1080i? In a lot of things the higher number seems better, but if P is better than I, would that even this out?

The reason I'm asking is I'm looking at two TV's, one does 1080i, but not 720p. The other one does 720p and 1080i, but is more expensive.

It seems like some people prefer 720p while others like 1080i. From what I've read, I think it kind of depends on what you like watching. If you are going to watch a lot of sports or other things that involve quick movements, 720p might be better. If you just watch some movies/TV shows/etc., then 1080i might be better.

Probably one of those things you'll have to test out yourself, if I understood things correctly.

Usually if a tv can do 1080i, it can also do 720p. What is the model number?

Not sure. Probably depends on what formats the game supports as well as what type of game it is. I haven't really thought about which one looks better for games. I'll see if I can find any type of answer regarding that, although I wouldn't doubt it if it came down to personal preference again.

As glad_ken said, I also thought that most TV's that did 1080i could also do 720p (thought it was required to support both formats in order to be "HD-ready" or something like that).

720p would be the way to go for video games since they're going to be designed to play in this mode.... having said that either is better than 480i/p that sd gives you. the important thing to check is to make sure that the tv can accept 720p and 1080i both. that way it will just convert the feed and you'll never know the difference.

1080p is the best format and has only recently been starting to appear in tv sets.

1080i provides more pixel resolution than 720p, but because it requires 2 passes (interlacing - the "i") to produce your picture, the only way you'll see the best picture using 1080i's better resolution is in slow-moving or still pics. You may see more motion artifacts when using 1080i.

Personally I'd probably prefer 720p for gaming and fast action. I think more tv makers are switching over to 720p instead of 1080i nowadays because I don't believe 1080i can be done (or done well? not sure) in LCD/plasma displays.

    Thanks, guys.

I figured that I should get a TV with both anyways so I wouldn't have to worry about it. I was just looking to save a couple bucks.

Your're correct, I saw and played the 360 demo at Walmart and they were set to 480i(standard) and the games looks like crap...it looked all compressed with jaggies all over the place, especially on King Kong. I ask the clerk to change them to 720p which is the correct setting for the 360 games, but he didn't want to touch it. Anyway, I saw one at a different Walmart with the correct setting and the diffrence is like night and day.

Ok, how do I find out what my TV has (480, 720, etc)?

I just bought a 27" Sony Wega Flat Panel but I can't find anything in the manual or online. It's not HD or HD-ready, so could it still get 720? I bought it in preparation for the 360.

My high-definition setup with my Time Warner digital cable box and LCD TV is only working in 1080i, not 720p. Looks really great most of the time, but you will notice the artifacts (especially in sports), which negates alot of the joy. The 720p mode does not appear to work with this setup, so I can only speculate, but I would opt for 720p over 1080i, just make sure your video source supports it.

Yes, I'd pay extra if I were you to have a 720p mode (within reason of course), though eventually 1080p will be here if you can wait...

I've never touch a Sony flat screen before so I'm not sure, but for my Panasonic plasma, there's a button on the remote that said "ratio/aspect" that if you press them it will cycle through the resolution of your choice(480,720,1080) and some HDTV you could switch them manually on the back of the panel. Are you positive you don't see them in the manual? You should look again, since I can't possibly see why they would leave out something this important. And yes, you don't have to be hook up to a HD reciever to use those resolution. Since you will being using the 360 and all of the next-gen game will use 720p or 1080i you don't need a HD reciever for them to look good.

I may have missed it in the manual, but I was saying the TV itself is not HD or HD-ready. Are 720 and up only available on HD TV's? I hate to sound dumb, but this is my first time venturing into this type of stuff.

Oh...I thought you said that you have a HDTV, but its not hook up to a HD reciever. If you don't have any kind of HDTV then I think your stuck with 480i which is the standard for all TV. 720p resolution and higher are aslo avaiable on your PC monitor. IF you want a cheap fix to play your 360 in hi-res(720 or over), just buy a VGA cable hook-up($35.00) for your 360 so that you could play them on your PC monitor...it looks just as good as a HDTV. Most people do this, if they can't afford a HDTV.

Well, damn! $350 was around the limit I had to spend on a TV and the Wega looked like the best in the price range. Oh well, I'll just deal with what I got.
