White House Counsel to Replace O'Connor

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
President Bush has chosen Harriet Miers, White House counsel and a loyal member of the president's inner circle, to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, a senior administration official said Monday.

If confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate, Miers, 60, would join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the second woman on the nation's highest court.

Miers, who has never been a judge, was the first woman to serve as president of the Texas State Bar and the Dallas Bar Association. The Southern Methodist University law graduate also formerly served on the Dallas City Council.

Without a judicial record, it's difficult to know whether Miers would dramatically move the court to the right. She would fill the shoes of O'Connor, a swing voter on the court for years who has cast deciding votes on some affirmative action, abortion and death penalty cases.

Isn't that how Brownie got into office by being a "friend" of the administration? Now that's the dubya we know and love.

Actually, it's more of a like father, like son thing.

black male justice retires, black male justice nominated

white male justice retires, white male justice nominated

white female justice retires, white female justice nominated

..but this is all coincidence, race nor sex played any role....and if you believe that, there's some great jewelry shops here in Hanoi that I could get you some good prices in...

I'm not pointing out the race or sex part. I'm pointing out that she was a member of his "inner circle" and that is why she was chosen (in combination with gender).

Miers, who has never been a judge ...

and thus is completely unqualified for the job. Well at least, GWB did not nominate his dog Skippy.

Seriously, George Bush is making a mockery of the supreme court. He wants the corporate lobbies to be content, more so than the religious.

Actually, I think like Roberts he picked somebody with a microscopic (so it would seem, maybe not though) paper trail who he's confident he'll go the way he want. Hopefully it will backfire (souter, etc).

    Same as it ever was...

Pick one of your inner cronies with no experience. His personal lawyer no less.

    I am not surprised.

I'm not a supporter of Bush II, etc..

But I do recall reading in 8th history class, something about "to the victor goes the spoils"

    Or something like that.

I would agree that it could have been much worse as far as the scale of extreme right wackos that GWB likes to send up to the bench - but then that is assuming that the "unknown" nature of Miers (and Roberts) equates with "closet semi-moderate".
