The news is a few days old, and maybe there's a thread but I can't find it. No one wants to talk about the craziness in Haiti? NYT was reporting today a Haitian-American doctor may have hired the mercenaries for the assassinations to install himself in power. Colombian mercenaries allegedly were recruited by an American security firm run from Florida, CTU Security. I am hoping it is illegal for American companies to hire mercs to assassinate political leaders in foreign countries. What a shady industry.
I found this story fascinating honestly. Chalk this up to reason number 5,000 why the US military funding and training hundreds of outside mercenary groups is a bad idea, and bad look even if it wasn't a US Black Water type of group. The first conclusion everyone had was that someone probably paid Erik Prince's guys I'm sure.
Check out the filibusters of the 1800s... glad we moved past that. Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico were all victims of filibusters from 1830 to 1860. Oh ok, there was also the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, but we're much more advanced now. Sanford Dole led the coup with the help of the American government... American militia came to the island, threatening battle, and (Queen) Liliuokalani surrendered. After the coup succeeded, Sanford Dole was named president of the Republic of Hawaii. Coca-Cola, United Fruit Company, and more in the 1900s? That's last century. In the 1950s, United Fruits itself asked the CIA to overthrow the democratically-elected Guatemalan President, who had been redistributing unused company land to local peasants. Coca-Cola (among other US companies) supported apartheid in South Africa Coca-Cola (again among other US companies) benefitted from child labor and deaths Just three years ago several companies were charged with crimes against humanity for financing death squads in Colombia. International companies are facing charges for crimes against humanity for allegedly financing paramilitary death squads in northern Colombia Killing. It's good for business. edit- added links and context.
Sean Penn has been in Haiti wearing those camo hats and he hangs with El Chapo -- Penn is also the founder of Anti-Fa.
Haiti has a history of doctor's trying to run their country. Not sure if it is true, but the scuttlebutt in the GARM is that Olden Polynice is the top suspect.
There are some struggling horrible countries out there, but Haiti is one of the worst -- they never recovered from the earthquake and they were barely hanging on before that disaster.
I wonder if the Haitian instability will have immigration ramifications here... I'm not sure how difficult it is to get to south Florida from Haiti by boat but I know its happened in the past with Haitian immigrants.
