To all the simpletons and ignants who think Galveston could compete with New Orleans and Las Vegas if gambling were legalized, here is what is waiting the fate of Galveston in such a case:

In Atlantic City: pride, anger, worry as city teeters on edge

    ...

The city has been devastated by the quick collapse of its one-time monopoly on East Coast casino gambling and could see its cash flow run dry by April. The ravaged local economy laid bare the city's bloated budget and over dependence on a single industry.

Now, even as local elected officials are faced with the potential of a state takeover, they hope some seeds they planted to clean up crime-ridden areas and diversify the economy could begin bearing fruit before long.

Atlantic City is a ****hole. If you go just a few blocks away from all the casinos, the surrounding areas make 5th Ward look like River Oaks.

Are you talking about gambling only? I think New Orleans only has one casino. I don't think any place in the US could compete with Las Vegas. Atlantic City is mostly casinos right? Aren't there a bunch of Indian casinos up north? Galveston could work with one or two casinos similar to Lake Charles. I think Galveston could definitely compete with Lake Charles.

Lake Charles is also a ****-hole. I mean, so is Galveston, but let's be clear about that!

I don't have a problem with major, nice casinos (Lake Charles has 3), but then you also get all those little piece of crap strip mall "casinos" that are tacky as hell.

My Galveston friends hate tourists. They recognize the financial need for tourism, but they hate outsiders coming into their city and acting like inconsiderate assholes. I'm sure most of them would prefer not having Galveston become a gambling destination. The people who want Galveston casinos are people who don't live in Galveston.

All I know is that Galveston sucks and the only reason I may visit there is if they had a casino. Of course, don't overdo it, but like many have said here, 1-2 nice casinos would help a lot.

Actually, most Galveston residents wouldn't mind... as any possible casinos going up will likely do wonders for surrounding property values.'

Nah, you don't need to go to Galveston even with the casinos... don't go. Stay away.

AC is totally dependent on gambling... Galveston is not... whether they would get that way with legalized gambling remains to be seen. What was Lake Charles like before gambling? Dod they totally rely on it now as well?

It's inevitable, I just hope they don't let Fertitta Fertitterize the whole of Galveston Island.

    Why not Corpus?

Went to AC for the first time 3 weeks ago. Was during the week, so not prime time, but it was busy enough and was fun. The lights, the setup, the atmosphere were nice. It was a little ragged close by, but most cities are the same regarding attractions with proximity to downtown.

American tourist are hated across the globe. Galveston needs to be a destination as much as possible. The port is great.. when they started the cruise ships, it was great.. Moody Gardens, great (RIP AstroWorld, smmfh). Galveston was screwed by the Mississippi River and the Gulf's flow, beach-wise. The city needs everything it can get.. and doing so helps Houston too.

Literally no one thinks Galveston will ever compete with New Orleans or Las Vegas.

I would love to see Galveston get a couple of new first class resorts with casinos. Keep Texas dollars in Texas.
