I wanted to know when a city last had two major pro sports teams in last place, but I quickly found this excellent link:
    https://theanalyst.com/na/2021/06/the-worst-sports-seasons-of-all-time-by-city/

They computed some of the worst ever city professional sports records by weighting each of the big four equally. That is, you just basically average the winning percentages of the major sports teams.

While H-Town only has three of the big four right now, the Texans and Rockets are so bad that they overcome the good Astros' win percentage this year.

I'm computing 0.332 for us at present, and if the Rockets and Texans keep playing sub 200 ball, we could easily achieve the sixth most futile city record of all time, nestled between 1953-1954 Chicago (0.317) and 1979-1980 Bay Area (0.350).

This would be an incredible achievement given that the 'Stros won it all! (I honestly can't believe we're not on that list already, but the author may have only included teams that have hockey.)

MODS: please move to all relevant sports threads if you like. Haha.

If anything, hockey should help a city's bad record, b/c isn't it difficult to get to under 200 in hockey?

The Rockets are awful, but they aren't worst teams in NBA history awful. They will still stumble to 17-20 wins, particularly late in the season once the real NBA teams have packed it in and gone into coast/tank mode.

In the NFL you absolutely could end with a sub 200 win% without being historically bad. While I don't think it will happen, the Texans ending the year with only 1 or 2 wins is feasible. Having a truly terrible/great NFL team can skew the results because they can have a win% that no NBA or MLB team can approach.

In the Rockets defense, at least they expected to be terrible when they decided to run a glorified daycare instead of building an actual roster. I guarantee you a lot of people on Kirby genuinely thought they were gonna "surprise some people" this season.

Looks like they only count 4 sport cities. In 2013 the 3 Houston teams were below .300. Texans 2-14 and Astros 51-111. The Rockets at 54-28 were comparable to this year's Astros at 106-56.

Thank you -- I was thinking about that season but had not looked it up. And surely Cleveland had a year that would break that top ten. That whole post is Detroit-focused, and as they say, it's so cold in the D.

can confirm. Had close to free floor seats to a pistons game when I lived in detroit that year, my first floor seats ever. Couldn't even stomach it to stay the whole game. Also, naming your arena after a disgusting pizza chain doesn't help

There have been some Biblically bad NHL teams with season with wins only in the single digits.

Surprised Minnesota isn't on there more. Between the Twins, Timberwolves, Vikings and Wild in the last 20 years there have been some pretty bad teams. Overall though I think there has been general collective mediocrity with the typical Minnesota season being finish in the top half of the league and then getting destroyed in the first round of the playoffs.

The Rockets are on pace to finish with the worst record in the league for the third straight year. I don't think we're all acknowledging just how "special" that is.

    Ain't nothing we haven't seen before. See Houston Astros 2011, 2012, 2013. :p

On pace for two championships in the next 10 years!

When the Stros decided to historically suck, they came out and said at the beginning "this is going to be painful, but we have a plan, be patient"

    Lo and behold, s**t worked.

The Rockets and Texans have no plan.

Rockets plan is literally identical to the astros

Texans have never had a plan

Dynamo are a Texans level disaster, have been for years now
