thanks for the site reccommendations....i'm looking to buy a zidane jersey, which is apparently hard to find nowadays...i'd prefer a 2005-06 real madrid jersey, because i dont wanna wear a jersey with a rooster on it, but i will settle for a france jersey....my friend who lives in nyc told me that the adidas store will get some france zidan jerseys in a couple of weeks

also, if you haven't heard the news about the penalties handed down to major clubs in the serie a:

WHOA. I leave for a week's vacation to California with the family, and I miss 20 pages of Soccer talk. Between the fights of bigtexxx and italian rocket and chrisbosh and others, it has been a great thread. Sorry to revive this, mods, but I haven't gotten my SOCCER fix in a while. I didn't talk much soccer with anyone through my vacation, but it's great to come back and finally do so with all you dudes.

First off, hats off to the italians. Very well played last game, very well-played kicks at the end of the game. About Zidane, poor guy gets his mind rocked with the comments from the Italian dude, and should have kept his cool. Matterazzi should also be thrown out from International play for his actions. Sorry, Zidane. Even though I listened to an AM radio calling of the game, I followed the actions and the commentators from Mexico narrated it well as the action on the field ensued. I didn't know exactly what had happened with the headbutt incident, but I saw it earlier. I came home to watch the entire game again on the computer and saw the entire thing.

I agree with most posters here, both of these dudes should feel the wrath of the golden rule later... and, to close this off, FIFA's rankings are a joke... again... :D

    On the rankings:
 Shoul is. :D LOL... even after US doesn't make it out of group play... LOL :D Nice find... even nice joke you made...

I am still going to plan the soccer get-together for everyone... hopefully everyone who is a soccer enthusiast is still up to it.

Looks like the punishments were handed down. An interesting note was that FIFA said that "Both players (Zidane and Materazzi) stressed that Materazzi's comments had been defamatory but not of a racist nature." Sounds like a lot of people on here have egg on their face for jumping to conclusions and starting **** when it didn't in fact occur.

Zidane banned for three matches, Materazzi two over World Cup head-butt
By ERNST E. ABEGG, Associated Press Writer
    July 20, 2006

France's soccer player Zinedine Zidane, right, leaves the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday, July 20, 2006, after a hearing with the FIFA disciplinary committee. The committee met Thursday to consider punishments for Zinedine Zidane's World Cup final head-butt. The former France captain was sent off for ramming Italy defender Marco Materazzi in the chest. Zidane, who retired after the July 9 game in Berlin, faces a possible fine and a symbolic ban. Person at left is unidentified.

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- Zinedine Zidane was banned by FIFA for three games Thursday for head-butting Italy defender Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final. Now retired, the former France captain will serve his punishment by doing community work.

Materazzi was suspended for two matches for provoking Zidane with insults.

World soccer's governing body also fined Zidane $6,000 and Materazzi $4,000 after a disciplinary committee heard the French player's account of what led to the incident.

Zidane, who retired after his team's loss in the July 9 final in Berlin, was sent off for ramming Materazzi in the chest with his head.

He agreed to complete three days of community service with children as part of FIFA's humanitarian projects.

"Community service is not something foreseen in the regulations," FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren said. "It is a gesture, given the special circumstances involved."

Zidane has said he attacked Materazzi because he insulted his mother and sister, while Materazzi denied insulting Zidane's mother.

FIFA said Materazzi was punished for "repeatedly provoking Zidane."

"Both players stressed that Materazzi's comments had been defamatory but not of a racist nature," FIFA said in a statement.

The players apologized to FIFA for "their inappropriate behavior and expressed their regret at the incident," FIFA said.

Materazzi will miss Italy's opening two Euro 2008 qualifiers against Lithuania on Sept. 2 and France on Sept. 6.

Zidane, who had already submitted written testimony, spent about 90 minutes in a private hearing Thursday morning before a five-man FIFA committee. Materazzi appeared before the FIFA panel last week.

Former Italy captain Paolo Maldini was critical of Materazzi's punishment.

"It's scandalous to ban a player for having said something," Maldini said at AC Milan's training camp. "It's the first time that it's happened and it's only because Materazzi is Italian and because they want to justify the gesture of a great champion, who made a mistake."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter had suggested Zidane, widely considered one of the greatest players of his generation, could be stripped of his Golden Ball award as the World Cup's best player. So far, no action has been taken.

In a French television appearance last week, Zidane apologized to children who watched the match, but said he didn't regret his actions because he was provoked by repeated harsh insults about his family.

Playing in extra time in his farewell game, Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words as the two walked up field. Zidane appeared to be distancing himself from the Italian, but then turned, lowered his bald head, and drove it into Materazzi's chest -- knocking him to the ground.

Italy went on to win its fourth World Cup, 5-3, on penalties after a 1-1 extra-time draw.

The Italian soccer federation said it hasn't decided yet whether to appeal the decision on Materazzi.

I'm glad they're not taking his Golden Ball award away, because he was the best player in the World Cup and he's been the best soccer player in the world for a while now as well.

It would have been pathetic if they did take it away. IMHO Cannavaro deserved it. But taking it away would be a bad thing, he played good in the tournament and one card should not change his entire play of the tournament.
