From my understanding of translation programs like Babblefish is they work on equivalencies but they are far from perfect. Try looking up a site on google that is in another language and have Babblefish translate and then read it and it will usually seem very stilted and odd because its failing to either capture the subtleness of meaning and also reassemble into proper sentence structure because not all languages use the same noun verb sentence structure as english or place the modifiers in front of the word being modified.

Many of the voice translation and transcription programs is done by a person typing or speaking.

I've heard that one of the big areas of artificial intelligence research is to come up with better translations programs. Anyone else heard anything about that?
