Seriously, between work and basketball (and now baseball season is starting), I simply have no time to myself.

Fortunately, Saturday the 26th is the last day of basketball season, and things should ease up then. My boy's team is 5-1 with 2 games to go...win the last game, and we're league champs and #1 seed in the tournament. My girls are 4-2, but they have to win both their remaining games to get the #2 seed.

I swear, I'm retiring from coaching after this season. I have Rudy T burnout syndrome big time.

 

We will be up for going. I dont play GT but we will show up just to hang out.

Man..this place is slipping...I know Im not the only one that immediately had a couple of different lines come to mind when I read that......yet...total silence from the peanut gallery....Im not sure if it spoeaks more to our maturity level or theirs......

[off topic] It's weird. I've been coaching basketball for 9 years, and for most of that time, many of the others coaches have been around as long as me. We all knew each other, knew each others personalities and coaching habits, and it was fun. Lot's of fun. We could get into each others faces for four full quarters, then be laughing and joking togther just minutes after a game, no matter who won.

But last year and this year, the faces are changing. Many of my colleques have quit, and new guys are taking over...and they suck. I don't mean they are bad coaches, I mean they have forgotten (or never realized) that this is supposed to be fun and recreational. Without sounding too egotistical, my teams win - every year. We're always in first or close to it, and always get close to the championship. (Sidebar...In the previous eight years, with 20 or so teams, I have made it to the tournament championship game 8 times...with only one win. I'm the Bobby Cox of LC parks and rec basketball.)

Anyway, it seems lately I've become a marked man. These new coaches all want to be sure and beat my teams, and they are sucking all the fun out of the game. Last week, in my girls game, the other coach had a great player on his team. She was tall, fast, and could jump out the building. But she got in foul trouble early - she picked up two quick fouls in the first 2 minutes of the game. A minute later, she got whistled for another foul underneath. The other coach started yelling "It was on #7, it was on #7", another player, his star is #1. Obviously he was trying to protect his star from getting her third foul. I saw the play, and it was definitely a foul on #1...I turned to the other coach and said, nicely, "No way, man, that was on #1"

He lost it! He turned and screamed at me "Mind you own damn team and don't worry about my side of the court!" He then stared at me like he was daring me to say something. I didn't know what to do. All I could think of was how he was so determined to win that he forgot why we were there. It was ugly. I turned to the ref, who heard him scream at me. I know all the refs, and all he could do was shrug his shoulders and say "Don't worry, we got the call right."

I'm sure we'll have to face his team again come tournament time. Please don't let it be in the championship game. I worry about how he'll handle it.
