SUGAR LAND, Texas -- A 17-year-old girl was shot to death during a fight at a high school football game Saturday night, police said.

According to police, the shooting happened near the end of a game between Hightower and Willowridge high schools.

Sugar Land police said a fight broke out on the Hightower side of the stadium, and an unknown suspect pulled out a weapon and fired at least one shot, hitting the girl.

Police said they didn't believe the suspect was aiming at the girl, whose name was not immediately released.

Police said the girl was a Hightower student.

"To my knowledge, we've not had anything like this happen at a stadium prior to tonight," said Mary Ann Simpson, a spokeswoman for the Fort Bend Independent School District. "We're all just shocked and sad, and we want to know what happened."

That really sucks. I remember a playoff basketball game (Hightower vs. Willowridge) 2 yrs. ago where a riot almost broke out after the game. Sometimes these rivalries go too far.

Yeah, I can remember several instances where Cy Fair and Cy Creek rivalries have gone a bit far. One time at a Volleyball game, the CF mascot almost got jumped by 4 or 5 football players, but security came over and broke it up before it ever really got started. Then there was the time that a few CF football players jumped a kid from CC and put him in the ICU - needless to say, they got in huge trouble with the police, they got dropped from the team, and in the senior panoramic picture, all of the football seniors were not allowed to look at the camera (I dont know why). but its freaky to look and see a bunch of guys purposely not looking at the camera - all because of rivalries.

Where is Hightower? Is that a new school in FBISD? I remember things started going downhill at Willowridge right after my class graduated (1988). I went back one day to visit some teachers and there was graffiti on the walls and one of the bathrooms was on fire. Heh.

Willowridge was a football powerhouse back in the day - since I don't follow it much anymore, I'm not sure how well they're doing now. The rivalries with West Orange Stark, La Marque, and Bay City were pretty legendary. Thurman Thomas graduated from there.

My high school, perrenial doormat Santa Fe, beat Willowridge when I was a senior in 1980. Willowridge was still a new school, with only sophomores and freshman. Included on that team was sophomore Thurman Thomas, who easily ran my ass over on a kickoff return.

    My brush with greatness.

I should add, we won that game 27-0, and I had my only interception of my high school career in that game.

There was guns at that basketball game too. Someone got arrested.

Hightower is pretty new. I think they opened in 99 or so.

Oh yeah, and I was mistaken. It was Willowridge vs. Yates. Willowridge won and the next game was Willowridge vs. Hightower. They had riot patrol and tons of cops for that one.

I actually go to a school in The FBISD, I go To Austin High School and we had our football game right before the hightower vs. willowridge game(In fact i was there roughly an hour before it happened). It is very scary what happpened. And my condolences goes out to the young girl's family. May God Bless her. She was just an innocent bystander. I am going to talk to my school Principal about starting up a fund for the girl's parents to pay for the funeral because i have heard there is a need. SO i will keep you all posted on that.

In the boondocks off of Highway 6 going towards Hwy 288. I think it is past the metropolis of Dewalt.

FBISD has numerous new schools since you graduated. What else besides Willowridge and Dulles were around when you were a student?

    Elkins?
    Clements?
    Kempner?

In addition to Hightower, these schools probably opened after
    you left:

    Marshall
    Bush
    Austin

The FBISD has enough schools to warrant its own UIL district.

Man, when I went to Creek (back in the dark ages), there was always a fight in the Randall's parking lot on Jones and Grant. I remember it was always the Thursday before the game because everyone would come to school Friday and brag about it.

This was before all the other "Cy" schools and the other "Creek" schools. There was Cy Creek, Cy Fair, and Jersey Village. Klein, Klein Oak, and Klein Forest too. That was it. Cy Creek/Cy Fair was the rivalry. Is it still that much of a rivalry? I don't know.
