I just watched the end of Jeopardy where the first place guy had 18,400, and the 2nd place girl had 9,200 - so all the guy had to do was bet $0 to ensure he wins or there are 2 winners.

He bet $1, and the 2nd place bet it all - and she won with $18,400, and he lost with $18,399.

    He CLIFF CLAVENED IT!!

    What a moran!

Maybe you have to bet a minimum of 1?

I'm always amazed at how bad the math skills seem to be on that show.

And these guys are clearly intelligent. They're always doing way better than me at answering the questions. But when it comes time to wager in any way, or when it comes down to the wire and they are picking clues (you know, like if you are barely above a runaway and there's less than a minute left, start picking the $400 clues, not the $2k clues, or vice versa), they completely blow it.

I can only assume that it's just not as obvious behind that podium what everyone's score is.

The trick is to be -$5000 and get the question wrong.

If he gets it right, then he wins; if he gets it wrong and ties does he still win as the incumbent?

Ties are decided by the contestants then competing on Wheel of Fortune immediately after. If the two contestants are still tied after Wheel, then they must have a cage match in Springfield on the Simpsons. Some tiebreakers vary based on your location.

You sure? I looked up 'what happens when you tie in Jeopardy' and it went into a sudden death overtime with one question. Granted the video it showed me was a tournament edition. So maybe yours is plausible.

today, i just watched an episode where frasier goes back to boston and runs into cliff and attends his retirement party.

True but think about it. Had he answered correctly, he would have won an extra dollar. That was a risk worth taking.

That's crazy. I remember a year or so ago, all three players tied, and all three came back. Explains why he bet $1, in my opinion.
