Duke Raises Student Fees To Pay For Sex Change Surgery

Yup. This is fairly commonplace. Abortion is covered at my and many other universities too.

 

How is abortion and sex change the same thing?

If I wanted plastic surgery or liposuction, then would the private universities pay for it?

 

Isn't that how the pro-free-market, no-regulation crowd would want it? You get to control where you spend your own dollars.

 

I'm not trying to be aggressive or anything, just trying to figure out the logic behind this.

The student government passed the resolution. While I would not have supported the policy, I do support a private instution's ability to govern itself, particularly when involving students in the decision.

If you don't like the increase in fees, then you can transfer to another school. There are hundreds to choose from.

If someone goes to Oral Roberts University and doesn't like the no homosexual behavior requirement they can go somewhere else.

Likewise, if someone does not like their fees going towards sex changes they can go elsewhere.

Everything. Tuition, fees, room and board. At Duke, that's $56K/year. X 0.3% and every student is paying $168/year extra.

 

My only issue is. . . how many sex change operations happen at duke a year?

Consider they have 30K Student * 168 - 5040000 additional dollars A YEAR
and these cost 50~100K

So for them to get value .. . there would need to be about 50~100 sex change operations a year?????

Much less. Student fees generally only a few hundred dollars.

 

I think it's cool that they cover breast augmentation surgery. More students should take advantage of that.

This is about health insurance that Duke offers its students. All students are required to maintain health insurance, but not required to use the Duke plan.
