Not enough. I would have held out for them to admit to lying about the election with a scrolling ticker on the bottom spamming it to their viewers 24/7 from now until eternity.

They were never suing for your benefit. They wanted to recover the losses their shareholders suffered. Same for Smartmatic. An investor-owned for-profit corporation was not going to be your white knight.

Not really. Having a higher cost structure doesn't give Fox more bargaining power to negotiate carriage fees. They get bargaining power by having better viewership. Telling lies about the election might have won viewers, but the court settlement is at best damage mitigation. I doubt Fox could wring anything additional from cable, so the costs don't get passed to consumers but to shareholders.

    Besides, I don't get cable.

no sh*t…doesn’t change the fact that it’s BS that they’re not forced to do public on-air apologies and tell their viewers the truth about this entire situation

Hey, tinman, comodore and fellow travelers, how does it feel to know that Tucker Carlson and your other Fox and Friends personalities that have formed your political beliefs have had to essentially admit that they have been laughing about ignorant you are to believe their bs?

disappointing. The Dominion stuff so far has made it clear that Fox News is exactly the propaganda network that critics have always called it, and that their hosts and executives know it, but it still would have been nice to see them take the stand one after another and admit it again in person.

The Dominion Settlement Is Just the Beginning of Fox and Rupert Murdoch's Nightmare
    https://time.com/6272910/dominion-settlement-fox-news-nightmare/

    April 19, 2023 11:28 AM EDT

Forget the repetitive media chatter debating the political and societal wins and losses over the historic record $787.5 million settlement between Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems, after the voting machine maker alleged defamation by the cable network for promoting false news stories that Dominion rigged the 2020 presidential election against Donald Trump. Fox settled out of court at the last minute, seemingly panicked over the prospect of a dazed 92-year-old Rupert Murdoch, CEO of Fox News parent company Fox Corporation, having to take the stand to explain how he lost control of his prized creation—his “Foxenstein” monster. But while it’s a historic and record-setting amount to pay to avoid an embarrassing public trial over the airing of an admitted lie, the settlement doesn’t mark the end of Fox’s or Murdoch’s nightmare.

Everyone should read the whole thing, especially the parts about the Board of Directors, liability insurance, shareholder lawsuits, and what this means going forward, for Fox and the other right-wing "media" stalwarts like NewsMax.

This is far from something that can be swept under the rug by writing a check, as some have proposed.

And since Fox News has no plans to change their behavior, all of the lies they tell going forward may be even more trouble.

This is why Dominion settled: Fox is now latching onto the "yeah we lied, but try and prove damages" strategy.

Appeals and all that would take years, and would you gamble on the GOP SC to rule in your favor?

I'd read it if he wouldn't censor the parts about him being an anchor on Inside Edition.

    Not to worry ...

That payment might seem to be a significant slap on the wrist, only Fox is out to make others pay for its mistakes. As Media Matters explains, Fox has informed cable and satellite television providers that it intends to sharply increase subscription fees, which are paid by everyone who uses the service, not just those who watch Fox News.

That’s not the only way Fox News is trying to make the settlement meaningless. Everyone will get the chance to chip in to help pay Carlson’s salary and for Rupert’s latest jet because, as The Lever reports, Fox is planning to write the whole thing off on its taxes.

… federal law allows taxpayers to write off many legal costs, providing that they are “ordinary and necessary” business expenses. The IRS has repeatedly affirmed that for major corporations, paying out settlements is just part of the cost of doing business.
