Well obviously the law is being broken at an extraordinary rate. So i guess you are asking, 'does the law need to exist?' to which the answer is of course 'yes'. Can't just have people wandering in without identifying themselves. security and tax reasons.

You do understand the unemployment rate is below 5% and without current immigration rates, GDP growth wouldn't account for inflation?

"These jobs" illegal immigrants usually take are either highly dangerous or extremely low skilled that pay a lot less than the Walmart worker shooting his veins up in the midwest because the jerbs aren't there.

Mandate e-verify federally and treat drug use as a healthcare issue instead of a law enforcement issue.

Now that Trump has mentioned it incessantly for the last two years, no. Not in the slightest.

If Mexicans could find jobs that paid the wages they get in America, they wouldn't come here. Enforcing labor laws and having a guest worker program ensures everyone that is here is documented.

Carpenters and contractors didn't used to be 80% Mexican. There are plenty of people that used to do those jobs for good pay that don't do them now because Mexicans have flooded the market for much lower wages.

Getting Americans back into skilled trades is an obvious goal the school system should focus on

    I agree

Mexicans taking advantage of US labour share isn't quite accurate

    The margin of manufacturing goods
between the Us vs. China is less than what most people thinks : 15-20% only, thanks in part to Mexico cheap labours ,FTZ, and 3$ wages with no benefit, otherwise this margin would increase to 40%. ( who would buy an over priced Chevy!)

& The wall shows short sighted in regards to the future, what if Mexico become among top economies in the world, crossing the boarder into the other direction will be a challenge

I think they were caught between terrible economical cycle and a wave of nationalism, otherwise their impacts should be viewed more positively

When you mean 'extraordinary rate' do you happen to mean that it has been sloping downward for the past few years?

To the OP, I don't feel like greater border security is all that important. What I do think is important is smart and appropriate immigration and work policy. We only have a problem because our policy is out of step with our market demands. But, I'm also not averse to having more border security (aside from the math of value for your money). If the key to get good policy is to first do more security, that's fine. It's stupid though to think you can just do security and leave everything else status quo and assume everything will work now.

The wall is a stupid and antiquated idea.

I'm OK with additional security, agents, technology to keep the flow of illegals down as well as enforcement of labor laws and hiring practices.

A guest worker program and a path to citizenship for those who are hear would be much more effective in the long run.

You used to hear about all of those things combined in an omnibus bill but welcome to the new Republican Party. Now its just attacks on immigration as a whole. We used to mock Europe for this stuff. Now we're seeing the same thing.

Honestly there's better ways of doing it. Just increase the punishment for being in this country illegally to where instead of deporting people, you just throw them in prison doing hard labor for about a decade to purchase their citizenship along with increasing the penalty for companies caught hiring illegal immigrants and the problem will solve itself in a matter of a few years with no need to build or man a wall.

That's a solution that should make everyone happy.

I watched Anthony Bourdain the other night and there was a great quote.

    (Paraphrased)

Americans love Mexican food, probably more than any other food now, but they sure are scared of Mexicans.

Beautiful country. Can't imagine why we'd want to take border security and immigration with Mexico so seriously.

What? Because Mexico has crime or even organized crime, you think the whole country is rotten? You so frequently come at things from angles that make no sense, and are seemingly picked at random.

Just look at this charity in Mexico, it must be the kind of place from which we'd love to take in every single possible immigrant.
    http://www.charity-charities.org/Mexico-charities/Jalisco-1547546.html

Whoa! There's more good deeds in Mexico? Look at this one dealing with a religious minority in Mexico
    http://www.fundacionanisa.org/index.php/en/

Look at all the good deeds that are happening with this group in Mexico.
    https://www.insp.mx

Those good deeds are as random as the fact that there is crime in Mexico and in no way does it make a blanket thumbs up to immigrants a good idea, just like random crime stories don't make a blanket thumbs down a good idea.

    Are you for real?

Mexico's (intentional) homicide rate is way higher than the US's. By the way, posted in another thread:

Add to that Mexico's very low press freedom rating. To murder and carry out violence against journalists in Mexico is the norm.

None of this is pucked at random, but if it were it would only further advance my point.
