Well I hope this is not an indication of things to come. I also read today that Russian is now selling missiles to Syria. This could get really ugly!

Iran, Syria to Form 'United Front'

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran and Syria, who both are facing pressure from the United States, said Wednesday they will form a "united front" to confront possible threats against them, state-run television reported.

"In view of the special conditions faced by Syria, Iran will transfer its experience, especially concerning sanctions, to Syria," Mohammad Reza Aref, Iran's first vice president, was quoted as saying after meeting Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otari.

"At this sensitive point, the two countries require a united front due to numerous challenges."

Otari concurred, saying, "The challenges we face in Syria and Iran require us to be in one front to confront all the challenges imposed (on us) by others."

The report did not specifically mention the challenges, but both countries are under U.S. economic sanctions and the targets of intense American pressure.

Iran, which President Bush had labeled an "axis of evil" with North Korea and prewar Iraq, was named an "outpost of tyranny" last month by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The United States has accused Iran of seeking to produce nuclear weapons, while relations with Syria have deteriorated, especially since Monday's assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Many Lebanese blamed Monday's car bombing in Beirut on Syria, but the Syrian government has denied responsibility. Washington is recalling its ambassador from Syria in apparent response to Hariri's killing.

Washington also accuses Syria of aiding anti-Israeli militants and supporting insurgents in Iraq.

Tehran and Damascus have been strategic allies for years. Syria was the only Arab country that continued its warm relations with Iran during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

The future holds nothing else, but confrontation.

    In Yugoslavia.

A slavic radical wanted Bosnia to be part of Serbia not the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so he killed Austro-Hungarian Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand. Austro-Hungary made all sorts of demands from Serbia, which acquiesced and then some, but A-H was so mad they invaded anyway.

Russia felt Slavic brotherhood with the Serbs, so they declared war on A-H. A-H had strict treaty relationships with Germany, so Germany declared war on Russia. Russia was allied with France, so Germany was automatically at war with France as well.

This was a problem, because after the Franco-Prussian War, the French constructed sort of a "pre-Maginot line" - a series of well defended forts between Germany and France. The Germans had the brilliant idea of sneaking through Belgum to go around said line and figured nobody would mind. Unfortunately, Great Brittian had declared that they would defend the Belgans from invasion, and so they entered as well.

The Russians effectively got their @ss handed to them at Brandenburg or Koningsburg, and the Austro-Hungarians had a pretty pathetic army to begin with, so you end up with the "Great War" between France and England, and Germany, even though none of them were involved in starting the war.

Finally, let me suggest a silly, paranoid delusion.

According to the biased, but oft-correct Seymour Hersch, the US set things up before Iraq so that they could move right on Syria. This included re-assigning Syria to centcom, who was running the war with Iraq, and having them draw up new invasion plans. This was when they expected throngs of happy people to free them up quickly from running things after getting Sadam.

So your plan is to start with Iraq, because they've been weakened the most by sanctions, then move on to Syria cause they don't have the oil funds to build a large standing Army, and once this is done, you can go after the toughest adversary, Iran, as they've been effectively isolated.

Now, imagine you're following your plans, but the public has become discontent at the thought of another war. You need to make it look like something you're forced to do. So you start talking about Iran, to draw attention away from your true target. That's fine because it'll help establish beligerance down the road.

Then, you covertly blow up the former president of Lebanon, a national hero who ended the civil war which was Syria's causus beli for invading in the first place. This is fine because the guy is essentially retired and mostly just a symbol. Given Syria's relationship with the man, they are the only one who would seem to want to do such a thing. Thus, you help foment unrest, which either causes Syria to crack down, or causes the civil war to restart.

In any case, you can then intervene against Syria via Lebanon and make the whole thing look like something you didn't want (you were talking about Iran) and you make Syria look like the aggressor (they killed the national symbol).

I don't claim that there's anything to this, but listening to the BBC today, I actually heard a (translation of a) Lebonese lady who was calling for France or the US to intervene against Syria and that got me thinking wild thoughts.

it was way tooo obvious for Syria to have done this.... if they wanted to do this they could have done it some time ago.... the timing seems impeccably horrible...with the U.S threatening most countries in that region I don’t see why they would do it.

its funny how the U.S has innocent until proven guilty "slogan" in their justice system yet soo quickly without proof has blamed Syria...funny shhtuufff...it was going to be Syria's turn after Iran anywayz i guess maybe someone wanted Syria's a$$ first.

I think it's interesting that France is rattling it's saber over Lebanon. We know they suffer from super power envy; maybe we can shame them into taking on Syria.

Must be terribly uncomfortable for Republicans to root for France to succeed at anything, especially if that anything promotes a Republican cause.

Didn't Nostradamus infer the latest of a handful of anti-christs would come from the middle-east (bin laden?, others?), and the final war would start there? hmmm...Time for me to complete the reinforced concrete bunker...
