This may have already been posted (if so, merge), but it explains "Moreyball" in a very relevant sense— the case for Jeremy Lin.

Long, but it explains a lot of things. I think each NBA team should have an affiliate in the D-league. Also they should increase the active roster number from 15 to 20.

Great read, though it sounds a bit defensive on Morey's part.

It doesn't really help to change the active roster from 15 to 20. They need to move to the same concept as baseball. There should be a 15-man "active roster" and a 30-man roster. The 15 who aren't on the active roster play in the D-League but are still paid NBA salaries (which don't count against the cap). Can't be sent down to the D-League after you have a certain # of years NBA experience.

Also, that's the real problem with the D-League. It shouldn't be a showcase league where free agents try to make it onto NBA rosters. It should only be guys under contract with specific NBA teams.

This article is Morey's excuse of letting Lin go last year. He had the chance to watch Lin closely and he knew Lin's stats in college..........he just missed it.

He is stating how analytics only gets you a part of the way there. The traditional watching a kid play is still important when evaluating talent.

This may need to be translated into an audio book or cliff notes version for some of the new wave of clutchfans posters . . .

Someone needs to forward this to DD.

Just because you have talent doesn't mean you're always going to be in prime position to get a chance at the top level. Lin fell into a great opportunity when the Knicks lost ALL their PGs on the roster...

If that hadn't have been the case he would have been cut a day or 2 later and made his way back to the D-League... and for someone to say "WELL, THEY SHOULDA SAW THAT COMING!" is ridiculous, you didn't, and the team actually brought him in because they saw something in him.

I always root for the underdog, and if Lin becomes close to all-star level he would be one of the biggest and best underdog stories of all time.

It actually shows to his credit LOL:

    The elephant on the court
    Apr 20th 2012, 3:42 by Daryl Morey | HOUSTON

It's hard to always hit on these type of guys. If the Knicks wouldn't have lost all their options at PG they would have been in the same boat and either some other team would have discovered Lin, or he would remain an unknown in the basketball world.

In fact, we should be thankful that we DID cut Lin, other wise, imagine what would have happened if we had kept him:

He wouldn't have received any playing time -you can't just assume Lowry gets hurt/sick. Never becomes a star, gets cut, coaches junior high hoops, no Linsanity, no great story, no money, nothing.

Not only THAT, but by cutting a guaranteed-salary guy like Flynn, then later on you don't get Camby, and then you don't get the big tade and picks from the Knicks, which could very well mean we wouldn't end up with DH12.

So in point of fact, it could be that cutting Lin may end up being the best possible thing which could have happened, depending on how it all plays out.

    :)

I agree. But then he's probably heard "How the hell did you miss Jeremy Lin's potential, Mr. Stats?!?" a few thousand times in the last 6 months.

Great perspective Nero. Agree 100%. Plus would Linsanity have been Linsanity in Houston, or was it because he had that run in New York on a star studded team that he became who he became.

Actually his excuse was Dalembert came calling, we needed a center and Lin was the 4rth guard on team and the only one with an unguaranteed contract (the other dude was maing 3M).

People who always the Rox missed out on Lin don't get it. We had no choice but to let him go, unless at the time you can safely say the undrafted 4rth pg was worth 3M and former lottery pick, or worth missing out on the C spot you need so badly.
