    Lakers acquire Chinese `Magic'

The Lakers and point guard Sun Yue have agreed to terms on a two-season contract, the team confirmed Thursday. The Lakers hope to sign Sun formally within the next few days, team spokesman John Black said.

"Hopefully, it will get done soon," Black said.

Sun, known as the Chinese Magic Johnson because of his eye-catching playmaking ability, will face his future teammate Kobe Bryant when China plays the United States on Sunday in the Olympic Games opener in Beijing.

The Lakers drafted the 6-foot-9, 212-pound Sun in the second round in 2007. He spent last season with Aoshen, his Beijing club team, and also played with the Chinese National team in preparation for the Olympics.

In addition, he played with China in the Las Vegas Summer League in 2007.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in June that he would make it a priority to sign Sun and bring him to training camp.

Sun's signing gives the Lakers increased depth in the backcourt heading into camp. He will compete with starting point guard Derek Fisher and backup Jordan Farmar for playing time. He also can play shooting guard.

The Lakers have yet to re-sign free agent guard Coby Karl. They also haven't signed Joe Crawford, a guard from Kentucky who was their lone draft pick in June. Last week they did sign guard Dwayne Mitchell, a free agent from Louisiana-Lafayette.

What's more, Kupchak said last month that he would wait a while before deciding whether to give an $80-million, five-season contract extension to center Andrew Bynum. Kupchak would like to see how Bynum responds to his offseason workouts.

Bynum suffered a season-ended left kneecap injury Jan. 13. He underwent surgery in June and is on pace for a full recovery in time for training camp in October.

I hope this guy is a million times better than China's other pg's. Those guys couldn't even get the ball past half court against better competition.

    Both, they both greatest Magic!

Dang.. he's 6'9 and only 212 pounds? Man he's gonna need to bulk up a lot... or he's just gonna get pushed around. Us Chinese aren't known for our athleticism either... I wish him the best but I just don't see this guy being successful in the NBA

The troll is weak in this one. I'd give it a 2/10.

All this guy has to do is be one of the top 5 players ever, win multiple Championships and retire early due to contracting the bird flu and he really will be the Chinese Magic.
