[da1] Roads, not transit, help reduce congestion

Why do libertarians/conservative types like to build freeways instead of mass transit? Both roads and mass transit involve government/ taxes which is their usual bugaboo.

Perhaps they like the idea that they could be driving in a very expensive car some day (they always imagine that they will be at the top of the food chain) and with mass transit they may have to be in the same compartment with some "poors"?

Maybe it is because they identify mass transit with Eastern liberals?

They fantasize somehow that it would be easier for private corporations to own roads than bus systems?

I can't figure it out.

Actually there have been conservatives that have supported mass transit. Notably Paul Weyrich who wrote and spoke out about why conservatives should support mass transit. His principle reasons were mass transit:
1. Enhances national security.
2. Promotes community.
3. Promotes economic development.
4. Helps reduce welfare by providing access to jobs.
