Could it be that we're just not that great and last year = fool's gold?

Last year gave us an amazing and surprising playoff run all the way to the WCF despite injuries. It was a massive over-achievement after once again getting shafted by Chris Bosh in free agency. But if the Spurs had just won their last regular season game @ New Orleans, we could've been one and done. We were one game away from being a 6 seed.

Reality is we really lucked out by playing a combustible and injured Mavs team in the first round. We deserve all the credit in the world for coming back against the Clippers, but we were down 3-1 and looked absolutely terrible in doing so, including an embarrassing loss to them without Chris Paul playing a single minute.

Could it be that last year was fool's gold and led us to ignore all the faults of the team?

Despite adding Ty Lawson, it's clear the team still lives and dies with Harden. Besides him, the roster outside of Lawson is full of really mediocre players that are either aging or have showed little sign of improvement. The poor Xs and Os and player utilization coming from the coaching staff is self-explanatory.

What does that say about a team that solely relies on one player to put up MVP level performances every game? While Harden is great, it's clear he's unable to provide the level of consistency to win a championship at this point of his career. This is what separates him from Curry at the moment.

So what should Morey and the Rockets do? I'm a huge Motiejunas fan, but I can't trust a guy coming off of back surgery to rejuvenate the team. We need change. We need better shooters, defenders, and a legit starting PF. I think it's clear we NEED a trade to ensure we get a top 4 seed, or else this is looking like a one and done team, like it could've easily been last season.

Our team was expected to make the WCF last year so I wouldn't call that surprise.

I don't think it was fool's gold. But I do believe we overachieved last season.

    Why?

    Josh Smith.

We definitely overachieved last year. Our point differential wasn't as good as our actual record would indicate, which usually means the team won a disproportionate number of close games = luck.

Our point differential was amongst the worst for West playoff teams andyet we ended 2nd because James Harden was so clutch

Pls don't expect the same level of performance and carrying Mc**** cojones

Definitely good gold. We won't make the WCF this year. I hope we do but we won't.

Houston and getting lucky has never mixed. Houston got there because they earned it last year. What's hurting them this year is themselves. The league now is on notice when it comes to the rockets so every team is playing them harder and smarter... these idiots just haven't made any adjustments for it. Rick Adelman said it when he was here... once your looked at as an title contender or if it's playoffs team will take away the top two things you do best so you have to adjust to that as a team and fire back other ways. We just have a incompetent coach that should know better because he played the game... I expect Morey to be into analytics and numbers he's a nerd.

Agreed. While Smith's overall impact was not that impressive, he beasted in spurts and saved us from being eliminated in the playoffs.

And acquiring Smith is as unexpected as you can get. A "star" level player being cut in the middle of the season, who could have thought that?

82 games is a big enough sample size to do away with a notion of "last year was fool's gold."

    We deserved to be there.

Rockets won more games than they should have last year considering their health. They are a better team this year. I don't think they will win more games this year, because of the over achieving last year.

That said, DMo is really important to the team. Harrell may replace Jones, but he has same problem so far...he scores around basket. DMo is only 4 or 5 that does both with any confidence.

I went to a fortune teller last night nd she said that as long as Tinman keeps making theads with one stars that the Rockets are destined to never win a championship. It's no coincedence that ever since he became a 99'er that the rocket have been mediocre. Also she recommended that to stave off this bad juju, Tinman has to eat at jus mac before every game.

Do other teams and their fanbases freak out as much as the Rockets fanbase does?

Every team has their shares of bandwagoners, and premature freak-outs generally go hand-in-hand with a bandwagon mentality.

Or we just played terribly in 2 games of an 82 game season. There's another thought

People who freak out pre-maturely should fling themselves off a cliff or keep their sky is falling bull**** to themselves.

We haven't played well for ten games. Eight of them just don't count.
