http://blog.beaumontenterprise.com/...mmissioner-lamar-not-in-2012-expansion-plans/ Lamar isn't going to the WAC in 2012. Louisiana Tech is safe for now. Wait, isn't that what this thread is about?
News that BYU wants in the Big 12. The Big 12 feels no need to expand unless they can get more money from their TV partners for adding a school. That means they would be waiting for a Florida St or Clemsen which will never happen. Only exception being if they lose another school. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/11066269/big-12-ads-say-no-discussions-expansion
Second half of that article is more interesting than the first. I'm sure there are other schools who want in the Big XII that also have no chance of being in the Big XII.
I agree. Would be interesting to see what that Frankenstein's monster conference would do after UL and RU bolted the next year. Also, Kansas, would have probably garnered some interest from the Big 10 in such a case.
If the Big 12 does not want to expand then change the name to the Big 10. Then the Big 10 can change it to the Big 14 with the addition of Maryland and Rutgers.
BYU is afraid of the Power 5 conferences splitting off to form their own division and doesn't want to be left behind. Simple as that.
Nah. "Big Ten" is a century-old, valuable conference brand name. They will (smartly) never give it up. Changing to the Big 14 (or whatever) and letting another conference grab the name would solve nothing and lead to confusion. The Little 12 should change their name to the 1+9 Conference or the Longhorn Conference.
I really think that, ultimately, the Big XII will need 12 teams. Not having a conference championship game will hurt them when it comes playoff selection time. Personally, I think Cincinnati would be a good choice. They are often good, but not great, at football and they have a solid basketball program. For the other team, they could have their pick from the Mountain West (maybe Boise).
