I have 2 folders on my desktop that I can't delete.

I installed a small extraction program(ExtractNow 3.56) for a .rar file I coundn't open. Worked fine. Earlier I tried to extract the contents of a .zip file on my desktop, and something went wrong. It made 2 folders with nothing in them. The first one I could open(empty), and I deleted it. The second one I could not open, or delete.

If I right-click/properties, it gives the location(desktop), and size(0 bytes), but the "name", "type of file", "opens with", etc... are all blank.

If I try to delete it I get the following error message..."cannot delete file:cannot read from the source file or disk"

If I try to open it I get.... "C/Doc/Own/Desk/folder refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different location".

I changed the name slightly on the .zip, and tried again with the same results. 2 folders. One I could delete, one I couldn't.

I tried a system restore, but the folders remained.

On a suggestion I ran CHKDSK /F after a reboot. It went through all 3 check stages, and immediately finished loading windows. I didn't see any error messages. I still cannot open/move/delete it, either from desktop, or windows explorer. Shift/delete doesn't work either.

    Can anyone help me?

    Thanks.

My system: 1.2 ghz celeron pc-xp home(pre-loaded)-256 sdram-40 gig ultra dma hard drive.(I have no recovery or installation cd)

to extract .rar or .tar files you'll need WinRAR
They'll give you a free evalutation version.
