Boom. Huge admission by this journalist of "being sick" and simply making up stories that fit the narrative he wanted to tell. This guy worked for Der Spiegel, which is a well known, and well regarded, German publication. The stories he wrote painted the US military in a bad light, made Americans out to be racists and ignorant, made American Christians look bad, and of course hated on Trump. This guy also freelanced for other big German publications like Die Welt, and Die Zeit - these are some of the absolute most influential publications in Germany. CNN went so far as to call this guy the Journalist of the Year!

People need to learn from this. What you read is not always the truth. Remember who pays the media's bills - advertisers. These folks have an incentive to tell you whatever narrative makes you read more - even if it's not true, which has just been proven. They want to make you mad, and then you want to read a sympathetic story that agrees with your point of view. They control your emotions and your behaviors, unless you're able to maintain sources from a wide diversity of sources and opposing viewpoints.

The German news magazine Der Spiegel has been plunged into chaos after revealing that one of its top reporters had falsified stories over several years.

The media world was stunned by the revelations that the award-winning journalist Claas Relotius had, according to the weekly, “made up stories and invented protagonists” in at least 14 out of 60 articles that appeared in its print and online editions, warning that other outlets could also be affected.

Relotius, 33, resigned after admitting to the scam. He had written for the magazine for seven years and won numerous awards for his investigative journalism, including CNN Journalist of the Year in 2014.

Earlier this month, he won Germany’s Reporterpreis (Reporter of the Year) for his story about a young Syrian boy, which the jurors praised for its “lightness, poetry and relevance”. It has since emerged that all the sources for his reportage were at best hazy, and much of what he wrote was made up.

The falsification came to light after a colleague who worked with him on a story along the US-Mexican border raised suspicions about some of the details in Relotius’s reporting, having harboured doubts about him for some time.

The colleague, Juan Moreno, eventually tracked down two alleged sources quoted extensively by Relotius in the article, which was published in November. Both said they had never met Relotius. Relotius had also lied about seeing a hand-painted sign that read “Mexicans keep out”, a subsequent investigation found.

Other fraudulent stories included one about a Yemeni prisoner in Guantanamo Bay, and one about the American football star Colin Kaepernick.

In a lengthy article, Spiegel, which sells about 725,000 print copies a week and has an online readership of more than 6.5 million, said it was “shocked” by the discovery and apologised to its readers and to anyone who may have been the subject of “fraudulent quotes, made-up personal details or invented scenes at fictitious places”.

Relotius told Spiegel he regretted his actions and was deeply ashamed, the magazine said. “I am sick and I need to get help,” he was quoted as saying.

Maybe Trump didn’t actually say Mexico would pay for the wall. Maybe Trump didn’t actually order crimes to be committed to influence election. Maybe climate change isn’t real. Maybe there weren’t Nazis in Charlottesville shouting “Jews will not replace us” that Trump called “very fine people”.

Thank you Texx for opening my eyes. Geez the fake news has been pulling a fast one on me all these years. I think I’ll vote for Trump in 2020 now and not opposed to him canceling the election if he might lose, I mean if illegals are voting.

You really are a warrior for the truth Texx. You are a blessing to every one of us.

In the end, it was solid and reliable journalism that exposed the fraud.

It looks like this journalist peddled in conspiracy theories for what it’s worth. Obvious fake news was obvious.

Why are all of the wingers that share fake unsubstantiated news on Facebook the same ones sharing this? It’s like a puzzle by numbers.

This is simply a piece to the puzzle.

Fake news exposed and attacking the OP instead of talking about issues. Sad but typical.

"Relotius was not associated with CNN, he never worked for the company and never had anything published on CNN platforms." (also, an independent jury chooses the award winners) (also, the one story that enabled him to win the award has yet to be proven false)

For what it's worth, I do feel like CNN has tried to do this, and it's not a good look. Avoiding the conversation of whether they are intentionally putting out fake news, after Trump was elected the diction and tone of a lot of the articles they pushed to the top of the page (ie anything by Chris Cillizza) totally changed.

It's because they can't argue the issues - they have no leg to stand on. All they can do it attack the messenger. I feel sorry for them - their lives are controlled by liberal media messaging, they don't extend outside of their comfortable liberal media sites, which make them feel good by parroting what they want to hear, whether it's true or not.

    So...let’s examine this issue...

    - Journalist was found to have written some false stories during his career and was justifiably sacked and facing ridicule

    - Journalist has never written for CNN or had any of his stories published on or by CNN

    - an independent jury nominated him as journalist of the year 4 years ago for one particular story

    - CNN acknowledged him as journalist of the year

    - the one story that won him that award has yet to be proven false

Yet, the OP found it necessary to create a post with CNN prominently mentioned in the title when the writer has never worked for CNN or published anything for them.
