I was just reading that, it's insane to think about. Think of the loss of life that would of occurred. And what an embarrassment that would have been to the country. Would we have blamed someone else and started a nuclear war just to save face? Crazy to think about.
Three of the four fail safes failed and the fourth barely prevented the detonation because of damage from the fall -- the bomb was 5 megatons -- the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima was about 15 kilotons.
Ignoring the failsafe failures, it seems like if the impact of a bomb actually hitting ground causes it to break and not to function, the bomb wasn't designed well.
Here is a comparison of the 2 bombs if they were detonated over Goldsboro. http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/?...0&hob_ft=0&casualties=1&fallout=1&ff=55&zm=10 http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/?...si=5&hob_ft=1968&casualties=1&fallout=1&zm=10
I guess that doesn't bode well for South Carolina. I would have lost quite a few family members I imagine. I might not have been born.
Okay, so......they're not still flying around 5 megaton nuclear bombs over our heads these days, right? I'm hoping more safeguards have been implemented since the 60's?
Nukes dont explode when they hit the ground. Most are programmed to explode a few thousand feet above ground level to maximize the blast radius.
Where was Obama during all this? Probably gallivanting around town as a baby. What an ass, all he cares about it publicity and not real threats against us... Then again, if North Carolina got nuked would we really miss it?
