They pick the easiest product, so if you legalize those, they'll move on to things that are harder, but probably more ethically repugnant. I think you're wrong if you think it will just make them go away.

Specific drugs should be legalized if we think it's the right thing for society, not because we think it will eliminate a criminal element from society.

A lot of them are large landowners in third-world countries where they have a comparative advantage in agriculture. Locally they're ethnic gangs that will continue to market a lucrative but morally stigmatized products that banks don't easily finance: like p*rn production or strip clubs. As with those legal industries, it will just be called money laundering.
