http://blogs.chron.com/nba/2010/08/yao_ming_works_out_and_it_feel.html Daryl Morey, talking after the Yao Ming workout, said the team now is probably the team the Rockets will have report Sept. 24. "We anticipate this will be our group coming into camp, 14 guys coming in guaranteed and five guys trying to make it," Morey said. In other words, no deal for Carmelo Anthony today. There is no chance for a deal before the Nuggets hire a GM. Even if Denver management has decided it is time to get what it can for Anthony, it will be up to the next GM to do that. Until they hire a general manager, no conjecture makes much sense, and it does not matter if Anthony wants to play for the Rockets or if he really, really wants to play for the Rockets. A GM will try to get as much as he can for him and that will depend on his evaluations of the players available. He might love, love, love Kevin Martin, believe in Jordan Hill and covet the Rockets' pick from the Knicks, or he could consider both players overrated and the pick a minor asset. He might think Danilo Gallinari will be the next Dirk Nowitzki or another Nicholas Tskitishvili. It is pretty hard to know how the Nuggets GM will feel until we know who he will be. The next Nuggets GM might even decide to keep Anthony around, at least for awhile, if he gets the choice. For now, it is enough that Anthony would, as SI.com reported last week, sign an extension with the Rockets. It does not really matter if he'd sign his next contract gleefully or merely happily, as long as he would sign it. The trick will be getting a trade and a chance to sign him. There can be calls made and ideas exchanged, but the word is that the real dealing will not start until the Nuggets get a GM.
Looking at the Nuggets roster, they look like a stacked team. In all honestly why would Carlmelo choose us over them?
Very Valid points. No gm worth a crap would want to take that job if they had no say on how a deal for Melo was structured.
And David Griffin, the front runner for the GM job, turned down the less-than-a-million offer. BSPN Link It also looks like they are looking for more of a yes-man that an autonomous GM.
Update on a COLD FRONT heading towards Houston: Spoiler There is no cold front heading towards Houston.
What? I'm sure Morey's going to say something like, "4 of the current guys won't be here at the start of camp, but I can't tell you why they won't be here or even who they are." This "update" validates nothing.
WTH are they waiting for to interview and hire a GM? So what, they just let the offseason go by and make no decisions because of the lack of a GM? Can the owner not make personnel decisions on behalf of the team?
Crappy article. He's wrong though that the new GM will simply "get what he can" for Melo, indicating that he'll be traded wherever the Nuggets choose. Teams will not offer as much if Melo doesn't want to sign an extension there.
Yeah, they "look" like a stacked team... In reality, they are no better than 4th in the West, and even if they have a better record than that, they won't get past the 2nd round of the playoffs. On the other hand, Carmelo on the Rockets would put us 1-2 in the west, with a great chance of making it to the conference finals.
