For Carlos, I think it is somewhat mechanics. He had a game when he quit trying to crush the ball and was actually hitting better. Then, he regressed again. Those games where every swing he ends up on his knees...he might as well be just swinging at nothing most of those times...because it looks like poor form all around. Mostly, I think it is all in his head. He's his own worst enemy.
Oh, where Smith quoted him word for word instead of cleaning it up. The tweet was posted here, didn't think anything of it at the time.

@ChronBrianSmith your intentions in your article were of real poor taste and had no affect on me. So, he didn't say those things and/or claims to be misinterpreted due to language barrier? I was actually admiring him for his honesty before. Now, it feels like a cover-up.
The news went national. Like international. Like Texas is full of redneck racists morons international. Congrats Smith on embarrassing a latin player who is close to all the other latin players on this team. You'll be blackballed in their eyes pretty soon.
It's common practice for journalists to translate/correct any broken english when quoting latin players. Smith chose to intentionally embarrass him.
Oh...okay...quoting him word for word. I get it now. I was thinking meaning. I forgot to turn my brain on. Long week.
bad intentions from smith for sure. reminded me of chupacabra baiting coach herman, where if herman had been an aggie coach chupacabra would have just kept in his mouth. but I don't think it would have any impact on us acquiring more latinos. The awesomeness of altuve, jorge and carlos is too much to be squandered by some hack wanabee writer.
I don't know of any situation where the writer for a local paper was the reason why someone didn't sign with a team. Man would that be weaksauce on the part of the player.
So weird. In that situation I'd much rather be quoted directly instead of having someone interpret what I was trying to say. Instead of worrying about the media quoting him verbatim maybe Carlos should put some thought into not throwing out his back every swing.
Gomez might be better off ignoring hacks like Smith, but it's still a ****ing travesty that you have professional "writers" like him working for our local newspaper. Stooping to that kind of low is beyond scummy, and does nothing but ostracize the players from the fans because they won't want to do interviews anymore.
Houston sports media is a cesspool outside of a few individuals . Sportswriters are a dying breed with the advent of Twitter and instant gratification . I never thought I would long for the days of Richard justice , but right now he looks like a writing genius . The Astros engendered a lot of resentment from the local media during the first few crane / rebuild years . A lot of that grudge has remained
Smith is a ******* hack. It is really bothersome that Chron still employs him; I will not subscribe to that paper until he is let go.
You'll never convince me Smith did anything wrong by putting down what a player said in his own words. I read the article twice trying to figure out what Gomez was mad about, then still had to read another article to understand why he was mad.
I don't see it as a cover up, more like he felt disrespected that Smith didn't clean up what he said. He just wrote the broken English, instead of paraphrasing or filling in words.
Gomez has been terrible But in an interview where he was admitting as much Smith decided to embarass him I would certainly side with Gomez in this one and there are no doubts about it Still wish we would call Kemp up and bench him though
I just want this guy gone. Rally killer, and strikeout machine and I cannot stand his antics when he gets a hit once a week. He's just not MLB talent right now.
