Guess I can't blame Canada anymore. They finally voted out that Liberal hippie, and elected a conservative. Things are already looking brighter for the 51st state. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/01/24/canada.election.ap/index.html
It's not any liberal, but rather that group of liberals in Canada. They need a change. They were troubled by the scandals, broke promises left and right. Like the Ontario Premier, who broke promise at the first day in office. Canadians want a change, just like when Germans voted Helmut Kohl out.
If American lefties threaten to move to Canada if a conservative is elected, where to Canadian lefties threaten to move to?
conservatives only got 36% of the vote (or such). and the other three major parties are all left leaning. so its not exactly a mandate.
There weren't unfair election claimed or recount requested. The results was based on voting rather than Court decison, why would they want to move? Besides, 8 consecutive budget surplus, while offering universal health care is pretty impressive to me. Besides, Canadians held them accountable for corruption scandles. They lost the election rather than the opposition won. Change is always welcomed, so the new ones can do something, and the old ones can learn from the defeat and come back better.
Canadians voted for change but, as insane man noted, the Conservatives only got 36% of the vote and will have to lead a minority government. The separatist vote in Quebec dropped and they when to the Conservatives too, which is an interesting result. The Conservatives won 124 of 308 seats and they’ll likely have to make some kind of deal with the separatists in Quebec to form a government, as bizarre as that sounds. The numbers would almost work for them to make a deal with the socialist NDP, but that would be a very strange coalition to say the least. This conservative regime is an unknown to significant extent. The old Progressive Conservative party was essentially killed by Brian Mulroney and its remnants eventually merged with a western based conservative party (the Reform party) which dominates the leadership of the newly named Conservative Party of Canada. There are some wingnut fringe elements to this party that show their heads from time to time but what this party will be like as a governing party is anyone’s guess. There’ll be some interesting times ahead.
It was hard to know what to hope for. The Liberals were old and stale an there was too much corruption associated with the party, if not Martin, and yet the Conservatives make a lot of people nervous. I guess that explains why the NDP doubled their seats in BC.
Big deal! The Conservatives in Canada still despise America to some degree. They may have some things in common with the conservatives in America, but most try to distance themselves from their contemporaries in the U.S. Although I'm not happy the conservatives won in Canada, I still gladly take their government over ours any day of the week. No matter who is in charge in Canada, I will always prefer the country over America any day.
I'm happy we have a minority government. I think that's definitely for the best. I didn't vote because my addresses are all messed up at the moment and I didn't want to go through the hassle. If I did, I would have probably voted NDP -- or for the mar1juana party (lol). A lot of people are afraid of Harper but, while I'm no conservative by any means, I say we give him a chance and hope for the best. I trust him a lot more than that corrupt b@stard Martin anyway. Besides, even if Harper turns out to be the nutjob a lot of people believe him to be, the minority government means that the damage he could potentially inflict should be kept to a minimum. As an aside, I find comments like "Canada is the 51st state" to be very offensive.
I think you’re speaking for a great many Canadians here. If I had to sum up the mood of the country as a whole this would be it, and that goes for your last line as well.
The Liberals definitely need some new blood and a new frontman. They should convince Brian Tobin to come out of retirement and take a shot at it. I always thought he'd be a great leader for the party. Then again, do you westerners even know who Brian Tobin is?
I agree with everything in this post 100%...i too kind of cringed when i read the Canada 51st state comment.
