Ever since Hakeem mentioned trade/waive, this is what struck me. It is impossible to trade Hakeem because of his salary. But, they could do this:

    1. Waive Hakeem
    2. Miami picks Hakeem off waivers OR waits till the time to pick off waivers expires, and signs him to the mid-level exception.
    3. Miami trades Anthony Mason to Houston for Walt/Los (or whatever combination to make the salaries work)

The above formula can be used with any other team such as Charlotte, Philly, Phoenix, Vancouver etc etc.

In this way, the Rockets get something for Hakeem without taking on that huge salary hit and get (somewhat) under the cap for next year. Hakeem gets some good playing time and possibly two paychecks if he is signed after the waivers expire.

    So, would this work?

I am assuming that waivers work the same inthe NBA as they do in baseball and football. That being said, teams pick up players off the waivers based on their record. Wouldn't teams in the East that are fighting for playoff position with records worse than Miami pick up Hakeem, if for no other reason, than to prevent Miami from picking him up?

    bobrek,

noone's going to pick up Dream off of waivers b/c of his salary. He'll clear waivers and then sign w/ whoever he wants to. Hmmmm...

I wonder if you could have a handshake deal w/ where he is... nah, nevermind.
