A good friend of mine sent me a message saying the military is on the streets, jets are flying overhead and they are closing down bridges in Istanbul. Says it looks to be something serious according to the news there locally. WTF EDIT: The news is saying there is a possible terrorist attack, ton of military in the air. EDIT: Turkish fly zone has been shut down. Nothing in or out.

Something major going down in Turkey-military jets flying low in Ankara, army blocking bridges, curfew imposed pic.twitter.com/ODZMrWbT9n
— Adam Khan (@Khanoisseur) July 15, 2016

BREAKING: Shooting is being reported in Ankara,Turkey. Yup, I was just about to post this...military is taking over according to everything there. Twitter and Facebook have been blocked.

Looks like an attempted coup, yes. Should be in D&D. I'm afraid the coup will fail. They would be safer with the military than with Erdogan.
Mannnnn i just bought tickets 2 days ago to go there and a few other places in europe. Does anyone know if I can cancel flights and go somewhere else?
No, you pretty much have to join the coup now. Generals' orders. (shrug) Of *course* you can change flights. LOL. This might be a good time to consider it.
Assuming the coup is successful, what would the new government be like? More or less secular? More or less US-friendly? More or less aggressive toward the Kurds?
It will be messy for sure. Erdogan is not without civilian support, even if they are the minority. He certainly is a jackass, but he isn't an autocrat. What a month this has been.
Erdogans partyis sending emails and sms to the citizens to go down to the streets and fight the soldiers.
Jackass AND autocrat, for sure. Worse than Morsi was in Egypt. Fingers crossed for this to go through. Also, a military-led government would be better for the Kurds, worse for ISIS (whom Erdogan sponsored and supported).
Yeah, that is not going to end well, best case is the military ousts the guy, probably kills him - and then they host a new election - and let people know that secular laws are the basis for the country. DD
I used award miles for the flights. I'm a budget right now because of grad school. I'm not looking to want to spend money changing my flight to somewhere else.
