I disagree. His body type and playing style are not conventional. He’s not the “slows down and moves to a lesser defensive position but still has value” type of player. The difference between MVP Altuve and “barely mlb regular” Altuve is a couple dozen beat out grounders and a handful of homers. If his speed goes, he not only won’t be playable at 2B, he won’t be playable as a DH.

I’m hopeful Altuve will be Joe Morgan 2.0. But he might be Dustin Pedroia.

The growing trend of baseball getting so young is probably scaring the **** out of most players. Martinez hardly got 110 last year after producing solid numbers his previous 3 years. take your money while you can. Harper did good

I don't know man. Like, how can you say altuve is so reliant on his speed? Yes, it's a part of his game, it gets him a good number of hits, and it will decline, but the guy is a generational hitter. So you think if he stops getting infield hits he becomes average? I just don't understand that logic. I think it is a serious misrepresentation of his skillset. On the defense, why would loosing speed make him unplayable? Biggio played 2b when he wasn't fast anymore, plenty of guys have? On the Pedroia comp...Injuries are a different discussion. If he starts getting chronically injured, it will suck, but that is more of a fluke thing rather than a representation of his skills.

Harper gave zero f***s about Washington and its fans by signing in the division.

    100,000 * ~$40/ticket = $4MM. Just $326MM to go!

I'm not saying that signing him was a bad deal - for all the reasons others have laid out it probably makes sense for Philly. But you've posted this "100,000 tickets" thing in multiple threads as some sort of economic justification, when it is a rounding error on the contract. As for merchandising sales, $10-15MM is a) an estimate, b) gross revenue vs. team profit.

The value comes from a winning team that holistically draws more fans and makes it further into the playoffs and gets more TV and sponsorship deals. These quotes about marketing impact in the first 24 hours are a silly distraction.

Beyond that, it's not like these are all seats that would be unsold. Many of these are people that would be buying tickets to games anyway, but just did it earlier because of the hype.

Its so funny seeing sports fans trying to justify figure out if sports contracts are justifiable just by looking at war and on the field performance but never look at intangibles that players bring. It was said to believe that Stanton last year with the Yanks brought in an extra 15-20 million dollars through the Yes Network Subscriptions just last year alone.

Ticket prices have gone up by almost 30% additionally think about the extra income they're going to bring in through concession sales, corporate sponsors, vendors, merchandise, etc..

First of all, the Phils had plenty of money to spend in the off season and will be making a hefty profit this year no matter if Harper had signed or not. If this is the case why are they raising ticket prices and concession prices if they dont technically need to? Its so wrong for a player to get paid but its fine if owners want to maximize their pocket books. Supply and demand works both ways.

I hope the Phils are smart enough to sell some Harper jerseys with the sleeves already cut off.

    Know your fanbase.

what are you talking about? Philadelphia was in the first place much of the first half of last season and they were not selling out games at all. They were 11th in attendance. Quit assuming those tickets or seats would've been sold, because that's not the case at all. Philly loves star power and big names.

LOL @ people claiming baseball is dead or it has no star power or blah blah blah. Its awesome seeing harper outsell lebron and that shitty lakers franchise. Now lets just pray that the lakers dont make the playoffs or land any stars this summer so we can watch lebrons career melt away.

Harper's deal is far from a bad one... it did surprise me that he wouldn't want another chance at free agency while still in his prime.

There will be current or future younger guys who get more total money, and more $$/year than what Harper just got... within the life-span of Harper's deal.

Hes getting married soon and im sure his wife and him want to settle down. Whats pathetic is that giants/dodgers fans were trolling his girls instagram the entire time. Im sure that irritated the **** out of him.

Bregman is going to beat Harper's deal and I hope Astros fans are ready for that. I'll bump this thread in a few years when he signs a massive contract. Baseball players are rarely marketable and the ones that do fetch a hefty price tag. Bregman has other teams fans watching his spring training videos on youtube and drooling over him. Its re marketable how easy other fans convert to being a fan of a player once they show they are human like all of us. Fans love seeing authenticity and bregman doesn't **** around.

Who knows what will happen. He's 4 years from being a free agent and their will be a new CBA in place. Bregman will also be turning 28-29 when he is a free agent. He might get a higher AAV but it's not likely he gets 13 years.

But he may end up with more total money if he produces and signs two separate deals.

The preferring 13 year thing strikes me as somebody who suspects his best may not be all that sustainable (or is already behind him).
