I've heard Frank Herberts Dune is among the best if not the best science fiction novel ever written.

Thoughts on it or any other Sci-Fi novel or otherwise you would recommend.

    Highly recommended.

    More fantasy than sci-fi though.

I couldnt' do it, but I will say I was in my teens then when I tried to read it. Years later now I could power through it but currently have no interest to read it.

Yeah it seems really interesting. I just got done reading The Once and Future King which I absolutely loved. If nobody has read it, then do it ASAP. Best fantasy novel I've ever read.

I never read any of the sequels for some reason, but the original Dune is an amazing novel.

Fantastic Book. One of my favorite of all time. Dont get too caught up in the series as it drops off quite a bit.

About halfway through the 3rd book in the Barsoom series. It has 11 books in total, but I've been advised to ignore the existence of the last two books. In fact, I think after this book the central character is no longer John Carter which seems weird to me. But anyway the series is very good so far.

If you like Star Wars, the Thrawn trilogy is highly recommended. Hopefully I'll get to that one soon.

So the god-awful creation that was John Carter isnt indicative of the books?

Nah. It's very different. It was written in 1912 and influenced just about every well known SciFi writer since then. An appropriate film adaptation would be R or toned down to a "hard" PG-13. I think the Disney movie was PG I think, and was a lame PG at that.

Good, I'll have to check it out. There are so many film adaptations that could have been really good but were constrained by a rating that was way to low to convey the original story.

I agree with this. Loved the first three, then God Emperor was just too out there.

The original Dune is of the greatest books ever written. Definitely read it.

The sequels, however, suck hard. At least in my opinion.

There's a lot of random jargon that they'll throw at you in the start, but it ramps up quickly. As a youth I was skeptical to read any sci-fi outside of the star wars expanded universe, but it was easy to pick up.

Interesting. I think this is the first time I've heard anyone say something positive about any of the sequels. Personally, I only liked the first.
