I hear you. I have a mixture of carpet, tile, hardwoods, and stairs. I would pay $600 or $700 (reluctantly, mind you) for a vacuum that would handle all those things well, but I don't think that would begin to get me anything decent.

Got a shark that we use for most of the house and a roomba that I use in my office. Shark is good for tile and hardwood. Keeps the pet hair in check during the week very well.

Roomba we have is a cheaper model and it gets stuck to easily. I use an upright vacuum about once a month in my office as Roomba is just okay on carpet.

I wouldn't use it for carpet if you have pets, bin gets full waaaay too fast. Does fine on hard surfaces. I have a Roomba by the way. I think I've had it for 3 or 4 years now. Never had issues with it.

I have a roomba I use for my bedroom/bath/closet and use it once a week mainly to control cat hair and it does ok.......cleaning it out becomes a pain but not a deal breaker. I like the fact I can turn it on and walk away
