For me, it's close, between Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, and even though I listen to more AC/DC, I think Led Zeppelin is the better band.

Of course, there were tons of great bands in the 70's- Queen, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd...I could go on and on. I won't list them all since Google can do it so much better than I can.

I think the answer you're looking for is Pink Floyd.

Best..or favorite..would be the question. To me there is a difference. I think musically, the best would be Pink Floyd. However my favorite, though they are not great musical talents by any means, would be The Ramones.

Tough question. I'd pick one of these bands...

    Queen
    Aerosmith
    AC/DC
    Led Zepplin
    Springsteen with E Street Band
    The Eagles

Beyond the super obvious bands that have already been mentioned:

    Slade
    Todd Rundgren/Utopia
    King Crimson
    Roxy Music
    The Meters

And I second Earth Wind and Fire - Best band you'll ever see live.

Led Zepplin was the only 1/2 decent thing that came from 70s music.

I know I'm going to get yelled at, but AC/DC sucks so bad.

    Personally? Kraftwerk.

Otherwise, another vote for Earth Wind & Fire.

You've gotta give us some parameters here: do you mean best band started in the 70s? Because Floyd and Led are both 60s bands, technically. And the Beatles made it all the way to 1970, so they were, technically, a 70s band.
Or the best band to play during the 70s?
Or the best band to come out of the 70s?

Yeah, I realized that I should have qualified that. But I've also found that too many words= confusing to some posters.

So...Bands that peaked in the 70's. Also, rock bands, not disco, new wave, etc.

But whatever. It's an open-ended question.

Also, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Blue Oyster Cult yet.
