What's the history/reasoning behind why most basketball teams are limited to 12 players per roster?

I think in the pros the average size is probably larger than the regular person.

Don't know where 12 comes from.

NBA active roster size is 13, with 15 on the roster.

    NCAA roster size is 15.

    5 x 3 = 15 or three deep

But what is the reasoning behind the limit? Why not 10 or 20, etc? Anyone know?

    5 x 3 = 15

you seem to be confused because you think 12 is the limit. It's not. 15 is the limit in both NBA and NCAA

You got a reference for this '3 line-up worth of players' concept?

The reason is really simple. Unfortunately I'm about to go out right now so I can't tell you.
