I don't expect Barkley to go broke either. It isn't like he retired and stopped making money. I imagine the endorsements and the TNT gig pay more than most of us will ever make.
By his own admission, they barely cover his gambling hobby. He basically spends at least what he makes on gambling and other things. I hope tinman is right and the Chuksta can keep this addiction of his under control, I like the guy and it would be a shame. But I wouldn't compare him to Jordan, one thing Barkley never did was make a huge amount of money as a player in the NBA. He made a few mils, a nice chunk, but nowhere near even the same zip code as Jordan did or pretty much any young star player in the league today. I am guessing he doesn't have nearly the same financial flexibility as a Jordan or a Magic or a Tiger. Heck, I think Pippen and even Rodman may have earned more in their playing careers.
I like Barkley's gambling problem. It shows how competitive he is. Good trait in an athlete IMO. Unhealthy obsession with winning.
Charles made tons of money in endorsements. He's not like half a billion dollars like Jordan, but he's smart with his money. Hey Magic didn't make as much as Jordan, but Magic bought into Starbucks when nobody would pay more than $1 for a cup of coffee. Hell magic is so rich, here in Austin, he invested into the new Austin City Limits venue. A very very smart real estate investment. Dream didn't make too much in endorsement, but his real estate business is quite profitable in houston. Barkley still has the same wife and i think only one child too. Even Kenny got a new wife!
I'd consider someone who throw away $10 mil an idiot unless he had $100 mil to start with. Then again he is still an idiot. I doubt that Chuck has that much money stashed away either.
hating? i consider myself have gambling problems. just not on chuck's level. but to equate gambling to competitiveness, like the other poster was saying, is silly.
over the years, chuck started playing hoops in 1984. and lets say he started gambling in 1998, that's 1 million a year he spends gambling. that's a upper level high roller, but not a whale. Charles made about $43 Million playing in the NBA. I think Charles makes about $1.5 million per year being on TNT. And his endorsements throughout the years, Nike, Tmobile, Old Spice. plus Chuck charges $50k for a speaking engadgement. Lets be conservative and say Charles makes about $10 million from all those endorsements. He's made about $65 million (not counting any investments) subtract 10 mill for gambling and then he's left with about $55mill.
Well you havn't taken living conditions, tax's, cars, investments, ect. in to count. He's got alot less than that but he's a man & he knows what he can & can't do. If he wants to gamble let him, I don't care its his money let him enjoy it how he wishes.
he's not doing anything illegal. I go to Vegas about 4 times a year and probably will do so til I die. if I were a millionaire like Chuck, would I drop $400K at the Wynn? probably. on sports gambling? probably not.
The gambling isn't the problem. The problem is getting a marker and not paying it. I know of one casino he screwed over claiming he had a marker when he did not. The idiot sports manager believed Barkley and let him bet. He then was promptly fired when it was found out Barkley never had credit. Let that be a lesson to all you aspiring bookies. Never take Barkley's word when it comes bettng, until you have taken the money first.
did you watch American Casino on A&E? there was one episode where this high roller comes up and asks for markers than his usual. The manager called up someone and they knew how many markers he took from all the casinos on this trip. he basically had everything to make a financial decision on the guy.
Barkley says he's done Gambling! <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8I27X-kXNOo&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8I27X-kXNOo&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
