According to TheScore https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1...nership-nixed-harper-deadline-trade-to-astros, the Stros and the Nationals had a deal in place, signed off on by both GMs, to bring Harper to Houston in July. The Nationals' owner group pulled the plug.
I don’t think Harper would have been the difference between a WS and what happened, but it’s certainly interesting. Really wonder if they thought they’d try to resign him. Also notes in the article that Houston was going to trade Martes for Avisail Garcia. That meshes with Nooks earlier comment that the White Sox like Martes and Fisher. Fisher or Martes for Narvaez would be a great deal.
Not so sure it wouldn’t have brought us closer to contention. It may have sparked the club like the Verlander deal did. It surely would have made the lineup better imo.
The Astros lacked timely hitting against the Red Sox. Against the Dodgers the Astros forced their will on the outcome. Against the Red Sox, If it were not for such botched calls against the Astros the series would have been so much closer. Harper would have made a huge difference in favor of the Astros. Now Nationals need to live with the fact that for being haters they will get nothing of compatible value in return. I doubt Harper resigns with the Nationals.
This just seems like something Boras would leak. Who knows how true it really is. I could see Boras using this to rile up Harper or other teams for contract negotiation purposes. Would've been SO COOL to watch that if it actually happened. Harper in HOU long-term makes zero (and all) the sense at the same time. Regardless, HOU ain't biting on a fish that big. Half-season and comp pick, sure. Hopefully Luhnow has something up his sleeve again.
i agree. Boras isn't happy with information leaking that the Dodgers will stay under the salary cap for several years and the Yankees not wanting to get crazy with the money. He is trying his best to run the spin machine because he doesn't want it to be like JD Martinez last year where he really only had one team to negotiate with.
I would say that is the case looking at the dumpster fire the Rockets are trotting out. Also they are not in a position to fix it. No assets worth a continental sh*t.
Nah I think I posted about it at the time. There were already whispers of a couple teams making a play for Harper. The Dodger one leaked (if I remember right) and a day or two before the deadline there were indications from within the Astros that they would try. Don’t rule out another similar type effort at the deadline if we are really good. The ability to add a superstar at the deadline for the playoffs for limited cost (because of free agency) is too much to pass up sometimes.
Luhnow was able to tank and built up assets. Daryl Morey never had that luxury and it is come back to bite him. It really isn’t a fair comparison.
If you were able to erase my memory of the last playoffs, then we’re better off it didn’t happen, in that we still have JB and prospects. The farm system remains strong, and as long as this is the case we will contend.
