Let's see. Greater chance of happening... Dodgers sign Pollock and Harper pass on Realmuto or Dodgers turn a catching prospect into a proven catcher stud and save 350 million plus. Yeah I totally see where your line of thinking is.
J.T. interest seems to be heating up. I wonder if that means the price is coming down, or if teams like the Dodgers and Padres are opening up their stance.
Why wouldn’t Miami give a window to negotiate? I guess if a team negotiated and feels they have little chance to sign him long term they could back out, but also seems a team might be more willing to meet Miami price if they could get him long term
It is the back out part. If there was a very good chance Realmuto would agree to an extension with someone else quickly, Miami might consider it. Most teams don't want to waste their time with a trade proposal that is contingent on an extension.
No morosi says the Astros have drawn a line in the sand and have stuck to it. There not playing the game with Jeter.
Oh well. Trading Tucker (or even Alvarez) for 2 years of a catcher making decent money would have been an overpay. The lineup is plenty deep enough to cover for having an average bat at that position. And if Chirinos ends up sucking they can go get Cervelli or Perez (or maybe even Posey if SF decides to tear it down) at the deadline.
Chirinos did not excite me at all, feels like a lateral move at best. Maybe Stubbs (look forward to seeing him up) will be good. Anyway, I understand the not wanting to trade prospects part, but I'd be fine with an Alvarez for JT swap. I like how Realmuto offers great speed on the bases for a C (eliminating the need to pinch run). And sorry, but catchers are waaay harder to fine than outfielders. Also I do hope we see one more move before Spring Training, been awfully quiet on our end outside of picking up Brantley.
Each passing day makes bringing Keuchel back more likely. If they do that, it's been a very successful offseason: LF/DH: Upgraded from Marwin/Gattis/Davis (1116 PA) to Brantley/White/Tucker. C: Upgraded from McCann/Maldonado/Fedorowicz (330 PA) to Chirinos. SP: lateral move from Morton/McCullers (295 IP) to McHugh/James/Whitley/F.Valdez. RP: Upgraded from Smith/Sipp/Giles (115 IP) to Pressly/C.Perez/Osuna. Flipped JD Davis for 3 good prospects. Saved all of their top prospects and a little bit of money so they will be able to make any move they want at the deadline.
I wouldn't consider Pressly or Osuna offseason moves. I also consider Chirinos a lateral due to his age, declining SLG from 17 to 18 (if you don't believe me, check BaseballReference), injury history, and poor defense. But Brantley is an upgrade, and hopefully our AAA guys do contribute big. Also the Davis trade looks like it'll end well for us. And there is still the trade deadline to look forward to, at least.
I am not a huge Chirinos fan, but it’s an upgrade because McCann and Maldonado were so awful last season. Pressly and Osuna weren’t technically offseason moves, but when comparing the current roster to last season’s, they will be additions in the sense that they project to take some of the innings lost from Sipp, Giles, and Smith. And since Pressly and Osuna are 2 of the very best relievers in the game, that’s an upgrade over last year. If they don’t resign Keuchel (or otherwise acquire a different ToR SP) then the offseason has been a push at best, since the rotation will have been downgraded no matter how you slice it.
