Got this letter in the mail notifying me of an impending refund loss. So basically this company is telling me somebody owes me money and they can help me recover it. I'm guessing they want me to sign something that says I will pay them 50% of it or something. Scam? Any way to find out for myself if this is true? Note: Refund is NOT from the IRS or Texas State Comptroller.
I think I remember my dad receiving that same letter. Supposedly there maybe an unclaimed asset under your name, that you maybe able to receive. That company basically looks it up for you and claims it, and if they get it they would receive part of the money. Long story short, it's a scam
its not really a scam. They get the money for you and charge you % based on how much your getting back. However, there are websites (often government) that you can search for your name and get the info for free. Here's the Texas website for this: http://www.window.state.tx.us/up/
Definitely do this. I used to check this site every few months just to see if anything turned up. You reminded me to check it again, and sure enough, I had $110.00 in rebates from a previous mobile phone contract. Cha-ching! Would rep ya, but: "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to DFWRocket again."
Wtf. I have several claims that add up to $400. Thing is, it's from unheard of stuff in El Paso and Dallas.
If it's through the state website, it's almost definitely legit. May be companies you did business with that are based out of that area. Either way, submit it and see what happens.
I get these letters every month too from the same LLC saying $1,700 is unclaimed. I've searched around and just don't believe them. If it's really mine, it'll show up on a state website eventually, b/c I'm not giving some shady LLC 50% of whatever refund or even worse fall victim to a complete scam and give them my personal info/consent.

I had an experience with an outfit like this. They found $700 that was owed to me. I checked it out and actually found something like $2500 that was owed to me. They wanted 15% after I collected. I blew them off for awhile because this was public information. Then I got a couple of strongly-worded letters from them so I sent the money that I owed them. Mine were pretty much all sales commissions from a bygone era; some of it many years in the past. As a result, I check that site now and then for another "deposit."
Guess I'll meet them, but won't give them any personal info. Don't mind giving them 15% if thats all it is. Didn't see my name pop up on any of the lists.
