IMO, I think you guys are vastly overrating how it'll "play" around the league if New York doesn't trade him to Houston. Teams refusing to make trades not in their benefit is expected behavior, not something shockingly player-unfriendly. Yes, benching him (as the OP suggested they could do) would be incredibly stupid, but they wouldn't bench him. The only way this would look petty and nasty is if they were offered a great deal by Houston and still turned it down just to be vindictive to Melo. That isn't happening here--none of the trade proposals are at all good for New York. Every team in the league is expected to make rational decisions and refusing to trade Melo for junk is rational.

I think it's still quite possible that New York deals him to us because A. Anthony's not that good anymore, so they're not losing a tremendously valuable player and B. they may want to end the drama and move on. But I don't think them not dealing him for junk will make them radioactive. (Jim Dolan might, but Dolan will be there whether or not they trade Melo.)
