While we wait for the 2022 version, who are your "best" Astros of all time, by position It can be hard to place a value when you look at guys who played here long term vs shorter term but much better years, but however you would value their overall worth to our franchise...which of these is wrong Catcher: Brad Ausmus. Thought about going McCann since he was the catcher on the championship team, but he not only had only two years here, outside of a huge game 5 HR, he was terrible in the playoffs. 1B: Jeff Bagwell. Probably the easiest choice of them all 2B: Jose Altuve. As good as Jose is, this was the toughest decision on the list. Biggio just might be the best Astro of all time when you look at total career. But Jose has offensive numbers that rival Craig, and he has been the face of by far the most successful run in Astros History, so he gets the nod 3B: Alex Bregman. Rader and Caminiti were in the running, but on a per game basis Bregman blows them out of the water. Bregman also has 5 full seasons in mlb and has been a key piece of 3 World Series teams SS: Carlos Correa. Almost as easy as the Bagwell choice. OF: * too difficult to go by LF/CF/RF because so many of them play multiple positions, so going with the best 3 Jose Cruz. Would be interesting to know what kind of numbers he would have had if he didn't play in the dome his whole career Cecar Cedeno. Best Astro OF of all time George Springer. Gets the nod over Berkman, Wynn and Billly Hatchers HR in the 10th DH: Yordan Alvarez...haven't had the position long enough, but the kid is a stud and will likely be the best at this "position" for the Astros for a long long time Utility: Craig Biggio. Played Catcher, 2B, CF, LF...so yea, not the true definition of a utility player, but he can't be left off an all time team SP 1: Nolan Ryan SP 2: Mike Scott SP 3: Roy Oswalt SP 4: Larry Dierker SP 5: Justin Verlander Closer: Billy Wagner Amazing how many great pitchers we have had
Berkman is the 2nd best hitter in Astros history and a postseason beast, so there's no way you can leave his bat out of the lineup. C- Ausmus (no good options) 1B-Bagwell 2B-Altuve SS-Correa 3B-Bregman LF-Berkman (gets the nod in the less defensively demanding LF) CF-Cedeno RF-Springer (gets the nod defensively over cheo in RF) It's stupid to call DH a position, Jimmy Wynn would be the pick for best hitter not in the lineup. Cruz is honestly crazy underrated, but he gets situationally squeezed out of the lineup just like Biggio. SP-Oswalt SP-Ryan SP-Scott SP-Richard SP-Dierker Verlander's tenure is too short
Toughest SOB who ever played for us. Saw him throw a pitch after warnings had been given straight Outta guys back, was walking towards the dug out before the hump could toss him
If we're going to add an actual utility player, it's Billy Spiers. Best defensive player, removing anything offense is Adam Everett and there is no one even remotely close.
C Biggio 1B Bagwell 2B Altuve SS Correa (though Thon probably is really close) 3B Bregman OF Berkman, Springer, Hidalgo DH Alvarez SP Verlander Cole Richard Ryan Oswalt I lean more towards greatest season vs longevity.
I go… C Biggio 1B Bagwell 2B Altuve SS Correa 3B Bregman OF Berkman, Springer, Cruz DH Alvarez SPs: Verlander, Cole, Roy O, Clemens, Ryan CL: Wagner
besides for no power, not getting on base, not handling today's velocity, and not handling hard breaking pitches.
I’m surprised Clemens isn’t in more posters all-time Astros rotations. He spent 3 years here, won the Cy Young award his first year here, wasn’t too far off the second year, pillar largely responsibly for the Astros most successful playoffs runs ever pre-Luhnow…I know it was only 3 years but it’s not like he was washed up or even that short of a a stint.
I prefer a balance between great seasons and longevity. Can't be a compiler but must have been a starter at least 5 seasons. C- Biggio ( starter 19 seasons even if only 3 1/2 were catcher) 1b- Bagwell 2b- Altuve 3b- Bregman SS-Correa OF- Cruz, Cedeno, Wynn DH- Berkman Pitchers TBA
I'm taking Castro as catcher, Berman in OF and JR over Dierker. Castro has twice the WAR of Ausmus in fewer seasons. Obviously catchers are harder to value, but I think we undervalue what he has been because he never lived up to that allstar season again.
C-Paul Bako 1st- Darryl Ward 2nd- Kazuo Matsui SS- Adam Everett 3rd- Geoff Blumm OF- Bogusevic, Lane, Palmeiro SP- Wandy
Wanna do the all-prospect, no payoff team? Robby Wine Cameron Drew Eric Anthony Andujar Cedeno .....?
