Of course it matters. It's just all part of the whole.

Not for value of a player if you have OBP and slugging. Specific situations may favor a specific type of hitter, but overall it averages out.

Yeah....no kidding. There's a reason lineups are constructed like they are.

Some of us grew up on batting average.

You needed your fave hitters to bat .280 instead of .279 and .300 instead of .299.

The permanent optics after the season ended were very important.

Yes, it’s been devalued. Lets remember that a hit is better than a walk because it advances runners further.

Then you'd want a guy like Yuli in front, no?

I mean, yeah but they’ve been constructed wrong for most of baseball, so who knows. 2 hole hitter should be your best hitter whereas for most of baseball it was a slappy hit behind the runner guy.
I honestly side with the people who basically say just hit them all more or less from best to worst and that’s good enough.

In a perfect video game world, this is brilliant.

And I totally agree with the old "NL" style lineup. The game was different then though, so take that into account.

The comparison here is with two players with the same OBP and the same SLG.

So if a hitter has a higher average, but has the same OBP/SLG, it means he walks less (which is fine) - but it also means he hits for less power.

Lineup construction....That's an interesting parallel with batting average.

Yep. I think avg w/risp is the way to separate most hitters if OPS is similar. If comparing leadoff hitters, OBP and runs scored become the most important stats.

So Bregman should bat leadoff according to this post, and followed by Alvarez according to best hitter hitting second post.

    Why isn't Alvarez hitting 2nd?

No but Bregman has wonderful numbers for a leadoff hitter. Could easily be top 5 leadoff hitter in baseball.

Actually he might be the #1 leadoff hitter in baseball if given that opportunity
