I saw a tweet by Newt Gingrich this morning that rang as true as anything else I’ve read in the past weeks. For those not familiar with Abraham Lincoln’s, Cooper Union speech on February 27, 1860 it contains the following quote: The speech can be viewed in its entirety here:http://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/cooper.htm The speech was essentially a pre-election speech arguing that the founding fathers never believed in slavery as a whole and that was only allowed in southern states as a means to maintain the union. There were no explicit rights to allow slavery to be expanded into the territories or the northern states. The Democrats believed the Republican Party were radicals by wanting to change the country by preventing the expansion of salver. Lincoln argued in his speech that Republicans only wanted to preserve what the founding fathers had intended; which was no expansion of slavery. Therefore the Republican Party were conservatives and the Democratic Party were the real radicals. In short, the Democrats were threatening the destruction of the union if the Republicans did not do as they demanded. This is not so different than Democrats today who call for attacking Republicans and all who support Republicans in their homes, where they eat, at the malls and at the fuel pumps. The Democrats today seem he’ll bent on a system that determines guilt or innocence based on due process but instead based that persons race or sex. The Democrats today seem he’ll bent on getting their way by use of intimidation tactics, bulling, smear campaigns or any other way possible. Rule or Ruin
You do understand that cutting the federal department of education wouldn't actually cut education funding right?
It's funny that he thinks this quote applies to the party not in power and not able to do anything but rile up its base to vote. The party that is actually trying to stack the court with conservative judges so that they can take rights away from people. "Your purpose, then, plainly stated, is that you will destroy the Government, unless you be allowed to construe and enforce the Constitution as you please, on all points in dispute between you and us. You will rule or ruin in all events." This today applies more to the GOP. The Democrats don't even have power. Hey, OP. The reason people are mad is because they fear their rights being taken away, if you think they are mad now just wait till you get your way and take those rights away.
- Democrats want to replace due process with intersectionality - Democrats want to limit your 2nd Amendment Rights - Democrats want to limit your 1st Amendment Rights - Democrats want to harass and bully their way into power - Democrats want to take your money and redistribute as they see fit - Democrats believe the solution to crimes is to remove the rights of good people Tell me again about all of the rights the Republicans are trying to take from you?
So it was ok to have a majority of liberal judges but not conservative judges? That’s odd. The quote is specific about the Democrats not getting their way and wanting to ruin the union because of it. Not so different from Democrats of today.
Well, neither part was true, I just wanted to point out that the premise was ridiculous. If you want to find conservatives in a liberal arts wing of a college, look to the history department. You'll still find a decent number of crazy far left types, but you'll also find some conservatives or at least libertarians which is unique in the liberal arts.
Not true. You're right about this, but this is something the majority of the country wants when polled. The founders made the constitution a document that can be changed if that's what the people want. This isn't true at all, the last 1st amendment issue that came up in the SCOTUS came with bipartisan agreement. I know conservatives think so but getting banned off Twitter is not a 1st amendment issue. It's a twitter issue. What do you call the Tea Party when Obama was in office? The racial animosity held towards him? The Birther movement (pushed by our current president) and all the silly investigations and threats to impeach Obama? What do you call that? Yeah, and the Republicans want to hand the country to corporations. Is this a good guy with a gun thing? Not sure what you're talking about here. The right to vote for one. One party does all it can to get people from voting and one party embraces everyone to vote...wonder why... Women's rights over their bodies for another. There's still this super religious branch of the GOP that wants to control people's sex lives entirely. We keep giving the GOP power and they will gladly start stripping away all the LGBT rights that the Democrats have fought for. If it weren't for the Democrats we would not have the LGBT rights we do today. Fact. I'm not talking about Kavanaugh being confirmed...if Ginsburg retires while Trump is president and he has a GOP senate what do you think is going to happen? Sorry, but wanting to stop a vastly unpopular judge from getting on the SCOTUS is hardly 'ruining' the union.
Outside of Muh Guns and maybe that extra few hundred bucks you are saving because of the tax cuts your points either apply to both parties or are exaggerations. **** the presidents campaign strategy was “WRONG!” “fake news” “travel bans” and “lock her up” lol. And as a straight white man who makes a decent living, you’re right... nothing they’re going to push is going to have any effect on me personally.
Invoking Lincoln to attack 60% of the electorate is a very stupid political attack by a Trumplican. Virtually everything Lincoln stands for historically in this country flies in the face of the modern day Republican Party. Plus the Democratic Party on it’s face is a completely different entity post LBJ Civil Rights where they split from the southern vote. I’d happily debate virtually every policy issue vs Lincoln’s Republican Party. Again... invoking Lincoln to debate the issues is an objectively stupid debate tactic for a Trumplican. The same Trumplicans that 3 years ago championed Texas seceeding from the Union to create a right wing fantasyland that mimics what the south was going for prior to the Civil War. Yeah... you guys know who you are. I’m sure we can find posts from 2008 to 2016.
But all the people he went to war with moved into these liberal sanctuary supercities! The Lincoln replublicans are here living in great places like Vidor tx.
LOL. If Republicans held a vote to enslave people of color/immigrants, it would pass their constituency.
It’s also the Trump administration who just last year had officials like General Kelly argue that the Civil War was fought over “States Rights”... taking a very anti-Lincoln approach to say the least. Yeah... let’s debate who is the party of Lincoln please. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...says-lack-of-compromise-caused-the-civil-war/
This whole due process shtick for Kavanaugh is stupid. Not being appointed to the Supreme Court is not equivalent of a punishment to being criminally convicted and sentenced to prison. The level of entitlement is absurd .
Nah, the Republicans fought to end slavery once, they'd have to be the party to do it again. We both know that the reason the Democrats fight so hard to own the minds of certain people is because the Republicans put an end to them owning the bodies of those very same people. You can whine and b**** a lot about what Republicans do, but it's clear that the Democrats are and have always been the party of slavery.
