Kubrick actually helped film fake Moon landings. The complicated part is that he was such a freaking perfectionist that he insisted on filming on location. This greatly increased cost of faking Moon landings but made the final product pretty authentic looking.
Yeah, I have read about this before -- one of the actornauts almost died from an allergic reaction to moon dust -- it's similar to cedar pollen.
They are actually there. But he calculated (quite accurately) that they would be washed out by the brightness of sunlight on the barren moon, when accounting for the crappy version of a camera that you would haul up there. He was a genius -- don't forget. Yeah, if engineers had faked it, they would have had a bunch of bright stars. Totally unrealistic. LULZ. Lucky "NASA" found Kubrick.
