Sean Penn is the safe pick and they ran with that.

I agree with what Peen said but I thought you were not allowed to use the Oscars as a political stage.

Yeah, not a fan of that. Be gracious, don't use it as a platform.

Well, it was a gay rights-driven movie, I would've been surprised in Penn didn't say anything.

It's Sean Penn. If he didn't say anything remotely political it would have been a shocker.

Penn was being honored for his portrayal of an historic and courageous gay activist so he gave a shout out to the struggle for equal rights for gays. If he'd been talking about equal rights for women or blacks, there wouldn't be a single complaint. The only difference here is that people are still voting to discriminate against gays. And he's right: shame on them. There was nothing inappropriate in what he said.

Like I said, I agree with him I just thought the Oscars 'punished' Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon for using the stage as a political platform in the past.

Batman, I like your posting in the D&D. I hope you've noticed that I'm one of the dreaded "libpigs," too when I post there. What I said was probably just fumes since I thought he was an odd choice for the award. I forgot that Penn was a political kind of guy.

How could you forget? He reminds everyone of that just about every time he opens his mouth.

I still haven't been able to see "Milk." Especially now that Sean Penn won the Oscar, I really want to check it out.

Loved everything he said, btw. It's needed.

I was so happy to see Kate Winslet win.

Mickey Rourke should have given Sean Penn the Ram Jam from the podium.

Agree. Bottom line- it's their platform, and they have the right to say what they want- and face the criticism if it's inappropriate. No problem with this at all- and like others said, it's Penn- what else do you expect? He's right, too- shame on them.

Now, I'm going to search my DVD cabinet and watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High to remind myself how far Penn's come-

"All I need are some tasty waves and some cool buds." Still holds true today.

Probably just thinking of what Kam said; deserving of a Ram Jam.

Judging the context of Penn's movie, I really dont have an issue. The subtext of Milk is the very sentiment Penn described in his speech. I don't see how anyone could have expected him to say anything else.

On a different note, Slumdog won best picture. Didnt see that coming. ;)

(PS I'm indian and already got phone calls from India, no one went to work there today)
