Enoli Paredes @ Carolina: 5 IP, 4 H, unearned run, 2 BB, 9 K Cristian Javier is on for Fayetteville and has a 4-1 lead to work with.
Some great play over the last 2 weeks. De Goti, Toro, and Meyers are 3 guys that I pegged as potential sleepers who are playing great right now.
His last 10 games he has 4 homers with a 300 average. His OBP is approximately 375 and his OPS is around 1.000 He has been hitting the ball in the air more and cut his strike out rate down in half. His OPS when behind in the count this year? Around 400. His average against lefties? 114
Seth Beer with two more hits. Now batting 333 with an OBP over .400 and an OPS at nearly 1.00 Has about a 2/1 strikeout to walk rate but has a very high % of hard hit balls and good strike zone coverage.
As The Beard said, I would take Reddick and Mo Vaughn if you offered me that’s what I would get from Tucker and Alvarez but don’t really agree that’s their “ceiling”. Both players are so young and have dominated the minors throughout their career...what Alvarez is doing right now is insane. It's hard to put a ceiling on these guys and I'm sure had you put his ceiling as David Ortiz people would have been telling you that you are crazy, etc. If you’re saying Alvarez’s bat has a ceiling of Mo I could get behind that but Mo Vaughn was an absolute slop...ended up with a final list height/weight of 6'1" 275. I've seen several people throw that comparison out there, is there a reason behind it other than the fact that he's left handed and his defense is a concern? Not being sarcastic, would really like to know if there's something within the stats that show he's a good comp.
Vaughn’s k, bb, and hr numbers seem to be more in line with what Alvarez will put up (if everything works out). In the upper minors Alvarez has consistently carried a k rate above 20%. That’s what projects to keep him from being as good as Ortiz or Votto and more in line with Vaughn. Maybe Alvarez’s “realistic ceiling” is somewhere between Vaughn and Ortiz. I just think hoping for him to reach the majors and be even better than he is in the minors (especially when it comes to strikeouts) is unrealistic.
No reports, he's still splitting his time pretty evenly b/t SS and CF, and unsurprisingly still an error machine at SS (1 every 4 games)
Although in my defense, I don't think dude needs any sort of jinx from me to pitch like crap at this point. Pretty baffling actually. Maybe he can keep it under 12.
