Sounds like a guy who could spend some time in the pen and then move to the rotation. Sounds like several of the Stros guys, actually.
The results and repertoire sound a bit like a Mike Fiers. Doesn't light up the radar gun, but has a somewhat surprising degree of swing and miss to his game. Those types have a slim margin between successful mid-rotation+ innings eater, and total gas can.
This is a bad idea. The AFL did not serve him well last year. He pitched more innings than he should and landed him on the IL this year.
It all comes down to him having command of his pitches. If he can get command of his breaking and off speed stuff, he can be quite valuable because he is very hard to hit. He has had several things align perfect for him..... the natural movement and spin on his fastball is a perfect foil for his change up and the slider looks like a curve but floats out of the zone. Reminds me some of John Tudor.
It’s risky but not necessarily a bad idea. He’s only thrown <60 innings this season. So if they want him to have a chance to pitch a full season next year and potentially contribute for Houston next season and in the playoffs, he probably could use more innings before shutting it down for the offseason. Or if there is still something he’s working on that he hasn’t mastered, he can use more time.
The A teams got some fine performances from their starters tonight. Shawn Dubin vs. Carolina: 7 IP, 3 H, BB, 10 K José Alberto Rivera vs. Kane County: 5 IP, H, 2 BB, new career-high with 9 K
Ex-Longhorn Blair Henley is dominating the NYPL. lol where was this in Austin? Guess we won’t see him in QC this season though.
Rainier Rivas, one of the outfielders that the Astros acquired from the Angels in exchange for Max Stassi, is currently 2-3 down in the GCL. Both of his hits today have resulted in runs; he has an RBI single and a two-run double. Raider Uceta, the other outfielder who was acquired, has yet to appear in a game since coming over. Shut down, I guess?
Sanabria?? The 5 other guys will have a big chance to improve their stock, could be a coming out party for Torres and Pena. Hopefully Shaver is being sent as a catcher.
Whitley thru 5 shutout thus far with 8 Ks and 0 hits allowed (3 walks). Struck out Kelenic twice too. Very encouraging.
Still a long way to go before he’s a real prospect, but David Hensley has hit really well since his promotion to high A (138 wRC+). High upside player given his build and defensive versatility. But he hasn’t shown much power and his current production is propped up by a high babip. Anyway, worth tracking next season.
Shaver with another HR. Anxious to see how he fares in the AFL. Looks like he’ll be Corpus’ everyday C to start next season and if he is able to stick there he will be a real prospect. Brett Daniels 6 scoreless innings with 11k. Great season for him, but I wonder why he wasn’t promoted to High A by now.
The Astros have a number of guys that are intriguing that are showing signs of breaking out next year. It will be interesting to see how the farm looks 12 months from now.
just passing this along/may or may not have been posted Honestly... I don't see any problem with him saying that. [Obvious]Minor league championships and winning in the minors are nice feathers in a player's cap but they're ultimately trying to get to the majors.[/Obvious]
