Why are they making him an OF? I'd think that 1B would be a bigger long-term need, and I hear that he's basically a 1B-only guy defensively. One of the analyst agrees. Beer does seem like a great pick, though.
I'm curious why, if they wanted a guy primarily for his bat, why they didn't go for Walker who seems to be more highly regarded. Then again, I only pay attention to the draft maybe two days out of the year.
From what I was told he is an exceptional athlete with strong hand eye coordination and may be the best overall hitter in th draft. Not terrible fast and has positional limitations but a very high ceiling according to the fella in DeKalb said. Astros thought that Cubs would possibly take him. I have seen him play twice as a freshman and none since. Just repeating what I was told. Astros really really like him as a hitter.
Probably want to teach flexibility early on so they avoid situations where players get road blocked by established players. They can always fall back to 1B.
Yeah.... he was isn’t going to make it to the bigs play LF. His speed is okay but his arm is weak and he has terrible instincts in the outfield. He is maybe a 1st baseman but really is a DH.... they drafted him because he doesn’t strikeout, he commands the zone, he has 70 power and even if his babip is 300... he will have an OPS of 900.
