We were talking about the highlights on last page and I noticed Ortiz was playing 1B. He actaually was heads up and made a good throw to 3B for the double play.
Guess I should backtrack... why are we posting highlights of DH's playing the field and commenting on them in the minor league thread?? I guess I've ignored one too many members...
He still could be, but he is very much a backburner prospect at this point with nothing really expected. This season and last season were awful for him, major control issues. Granted it was a very small sample this season, he's been shut down for most of the year with an "elbow issue" At this point it would probably be better for us to just hold onto him and see if he can figure it out than to give away a talented arm for peanuts.
He's still super young. Just comparing him to prospects, he is younger, with arguably better stuff and more proven than Braves prospect Kyle Wright, who is showing up on most top 50s. I don't think any team would view him with that kind of value, so may as well see what he's got next year.
Not at the moment... poster child for why potential is a dreaded word, especially in regards to prospects and their overall value. He went from a throw-in in the Marlins trade, to an uncovered gem, to an untradeable prospect with immense upside, to now questions about maturity/work ethic and overall future ability to bounce back. Like Reed, since he really wouldn't fetch a big name now, Astros are better off holding on to him and seeing if he can put it together... still very young to the point that anything can happen.
Ortiz was passable in the WS when the Sox needed him to play so they could keep his bat in the lineup. That's all you can really expect. Gattis playing LF in the WS would be a good comparison.
Googling a random article on Martes, I get this quote from Hinch. "I'm more proud of how he's learning at this level than even what he's doing," Hinch said. "His openness to video and advanced scouting and to trying to pitch to a game plan - to most things that 21-year-olds don't have to deal with because they're in the minors." Doesn't really strike me as being uncoachable (not that Hinch would ever badmouth him). Do you have a link to anything suggesting he's uncoachable?
- Gliberto Celestino went 3-4 with a two-run homer (4) in Tri-City's 7-3 win over Brooklyn - César Rosado walked two and struck out five over five no-hit innings for Quad Cities - Brett Adcock walked one and struck out four in three hitless innings in his Texas League debut
